I am converting one of my old desktop (about 5 years old, ) to Linux.

DELL OPTIPLEX 9020
4th Generation Intel(R) Core(T M) i7-4770 Processor (3.4GHz, 8M, 84W)
12 gb Memory
500GB SSD

Basic usage is

1) Internet
2) Google sheet documents
3) Backup my business documents
4) Want to Connect to Amazon S3 for file storage (Backup)
5) You tube occationally
6) zoom meeting

I am not an expert in linux. Beginer and trying to learn.

There are 5 Popular Lunux based on distrowatch.com

1 MX Linux
2 Manjaro
3 Mint
4 Pop!_OS
5 Ubuntu

So which varient of Linux I should use. Important is I should able to connect to Amzon S3 and store my backup

Please suggest.

Thanks

Try Ubuntu, TS. I've a lenovo notebook. Ubuntu works flawlessly on it with Wayland (Even brightness, autorotate, touchscreen etc).
On Manjaro, the brightness adjustments doesn't work

The one thing I hate about Ubuntu is the app store. Some apps can find in app store, most have to install through apt. E.g. try searching for zsh in the app store.
Have to manually download synaptic or something similar to have a gui for apt

Manjaro pamac has everything, including AUR.:vijayadmin:

For a beginner I highly recommend linux mint. Cinnamon DE is probably going to be the closest you can get to a windows like environment which makes the transition easier.

When you level up abit, play with awesome wm. :p

Whichever ones you want to try, download and write onto a removable USB stick ..

All of them have a bootable LiveCD/LiveUSB mode and you can boot from the USB and check if your hardware is supported, if you are comfortable with the default desktop environment.

Once you decide, install to disk

I'm new person and I switch between my Ubuntu Linux (Desktop Ubuntu 20.04.3 LTS) and Windows 7 on my Optiplex 3010 PC.

More than 90% of time I don't feel any different. Many things work.

Been distro hopping and finally returned to pop os. Just wanted something that works out of box with no tweaking.

Dabbled with a few distros Linux in a few VMs over a few months and settled on Ubuntu in the end for a primary boot distro. Just feel that it's a good balance - it doesn't try too hard to be Windows and retains its own identity, while still giving the best of what Linux has to offer and the ease of setup. It helped that the 2022.04 LTS variant was just released, giving a strong psychological sense of support and relevancy.

Did want to try Fedora too, but wasn't fully convinced.

Tried before, but didn't install it, for 2 reasons.
1. I still dual boot with Win10 on this laptop, and PopOS's official site states to disable Secure Boot, which is needed for my Win10 installation.

2. I installed when 22.04 was out. Pop wasn't yet updated.

Ubuntu 18.0 is ideal.

You can easily reset in case of errors, secure reboot, safer than Win, and even install ghost image of Win OS (including partitioning of drives).

Learn Debian or RedHat if you want more customised settings.
