Career progression is really about the Ability, Skills and Knowledge of an Individual and also some element of opportunity.

It's a trade-off I suppose. Spending the money to get an MBA and working at the same time vs putting 100% effort on your work.

it really depends on whether your mba is a top tier mba... top tier = more chance and opportunities to recover the investment, else it may just be a waste of time and money unless you get lucky or are really good at networking.

Local uni 2nd upper hons got chance to go in? Usually study MBA is to network one. Lol

go in where? different institutions different requirement. for most top tier MBA, usually 2nd upper meets the GPA cut-off criteria / negative filter unless you were really borderline. other factors include gmat, progressive work experiences, good recommendations and good essays.

it really depends on what you want your mba to do for you. if you want to rebrand yourself or do a career change, the top tier mba can do that for you if you are good at networking. lower tier mba network everyday also maybe cannot achieve that.

I made the decision not to proceed with the MBA.

I do not have any regrets. The time which I could use it to do a MBA was invested in building valuable working experience which subsequently I was headhunted for a senior position some years later (which is where I am to date).

I think it is very difficult to debate whether or not MBA is useful. There are always 2 sides on a coin. Some of my friends manage to secure a director position without even having a degree. Some have MBA but remain as a normal worker. Again, there is no strong data to justify whether having MBA is better or not. Some personal experience: -

1. Is having a degree useful? Joined a firm at a diploma holder long time ago (1998) and draw about $1600. 50-60% of my colleagues doesn't have a degree and they think it is not necessary. Paying S$20,000+ for a local degree and S$50,000-100,000 for an oversea degree is crazy! Local university admission during 2000 is so difficult for poly students because only top 10% can get a place in NTU or NUS. I got a company sponsorship after I got accepted into NTU. I returned to my company drawing a pay of $3000 after I graduated. I wonder how much I would draw if I didn't go for further studies assuming I get 5% increment every year.

2. Is MBA useful? No idea because those who doesn't have one say it is useless while those who own it say it is useful. Again there are both sides to everything.

I don't think company will be so stupid to sponsor their employees to go for degree, masters or PHD course if education is not useful. Why?

First, you have to fork up a sum of money ranging from $30,000-150,000 to sponsor these students. If education is so useless, why not spend S$150,000 on retreat or bonuses instead?

Second, you have to give them exam leaves or maybe make some special work arrangement for them so that they can focus on their education. Why have to go through all the trouble?

Lastly, studying is very disruptive to work and family life thus may affect work performance. If employees dont study, they can work longer in office and earn more for the company?
