perhaps useful if you want a change in job?

I put it this way.

If I need to invest in a MBA, it should be with a reputable university such as Insead or Manchester Business School.

Other than that, I shall not waste my time and efforts.

Studying for a MBA does not just entail the academnic aspects but also the network and quality of coursework with classmates and friends during the programme.

So why didn't you go to those two schools?

Hi everyone,

I've read up quite a bit on this thread and I must say that it is very informative with different perspectives from everyone.

I graduated from a local University with second upper hons and have been working in the civil service for 2 years. My goal is to go into marketing/brand management. I tried applying after graduation but was unsuccessful. Most companies prefer candidates with a business degree.

I'm considering doing a part time MBA for a career change (so that I can cont working and earning money). Understand that most programmes require some work experience (and I'm considered relatively junior). Would it be advisable for me to do consider obtaining an MBA?

Thank you

which field did you do your undergrad degree in?
how much money do you have to burn on your MBA?
what job were you holding in the civil service?

an alternative would be to start over and just to do some internships/fresh grad positions in marketing/brand management to gain experience if you can't afford an MBA. there's positions such as...

https://hilton.taleo.net/careersection/apac_external/jobdetail.ftl?lang=en&job=255928
http://sg.jobsdb.com/SG/EN/Search/JobAdSingleDetail?jobsIdList=400003002037351

It's not true that this field requires business degrees. I entered without a business degree but I had relevant internship experience.

thats a good idea if Jericho2014 is willing to settle for intern $$.
and it really depends on what kind of job he wants to do. Maybe he wants to market or managed big brands ie Apple/pfizer/P&G not willing to do Hospitality?

You state that you are from a "top jc", yet chose to do a Beng degree at NTU on scholarship. That is a really bizarre choice.

Not only is NTU lower-ranked than the ivies/oxbridge, it is even ranked lower than NUS. In fact, NUS engineering outranks NTU in every single specialisation. And we know how easy it is to get into NTU engine compared to NUS (and even when compared to other NTU courses like business).

Guess you really do need the Master's degree if you want a reset

I came from ACJC, screwed up my A' Levels grades as I played too much and had no choice but to enrol for the Engineering school at NTU.

Still, I worked hard after graduating from NTU, obtained a decent score for my GMAT and managed to get into the NUS MBA.

Fast forward to present day. My hardwork despite all the multiple constraints as a part-time student allowed me to graduate as one of the top graduates from the course along with the receipt of a prestigious book prize.

Moral of the story is that the so-called "reset" is possible so long u endeavour to work hard to pursue your ideals :)

settling for intern $$ might be cheaper than investing in an MBA. thats why I askd how much money he has to burn.

if you don't have relevant experience/connection, then don't be so choosy about where to do an internship. marketing/brand management skills are highly transferable. I know apple and pfizer does not require industry specific skills (they will provide the training). P&G tends to be more picky.

Pfizer true.. a few of my sec school friends grad from NUS Pharm are doing brand management.

Apple not sure how its done in SG, states no training. yes P&G is very picky.

that in bold is very true, but we never know, can't read minds. LOL

A measly 680 but that was sufficient to get into the course 3 years back though ... dunno about the "market price" now lol

Beyond the book prize, what has the MBA done for you? You alluded to career rescue but I don't think I saw any details about that.

Got a promotion and 20% pay increase. Plus a bit more self-confidence emanating from the exposure that the course has given me.

Still working hard on my ROI though.

You see the MBA can never help you if u choose not to help yourself in the first place. The completion of the course will not give u a promotion by default, you gotta fight for it yourself!

Strictness on Admission Criteria

I am currently waiting for my ACCA result and have obtained a second upper class honours in applied accounting by oxford-brookes university. I have about 3 years of working experience in my company as a junior executive and am currently looking into MBA course sponsored by my company as they would like to prepare me for a management position. One of the schools that I am looking at is Manchester Business School (MBS). However one of their admission criteria is to have at least 3 years of managerial position. Anyone know if MBS is strict with their admission criteria? I'm not too sure if I stand a chance to get into the course as I only have 3 years of junior experience...

are you referring to the full time mbs mba in uk? i have a colleague that did the part-time mbs mba in singapore, and he definitely didn't have 3 years of managerial experience when he started. a quick check of the uk mbs mba shows a requirement of 3 years progressive work experience, with leadership experiences. not 3 years worth of leadership/mangerial experiences. even top mbas don't require 3 years worth of managerial experiences.

Thanks for your prompt reply.

My company has only grown from being an SME to being considered a large company (annual revenue more than $100m and more than 200 employes) last year. It currently still adopts a flat organisational structure. Thus there is not much leadership experience (to manage people) to gain. However I have total autonomy to fulfil my responsibility. Can this be considered as leadership experience?

leadership experience doesn't exactly equate to managing people, and it doesn't need to come from work, though it's good to have. just need to show progression in your career (can be promotion in grade rather than appointment), and demonstrate the potential to be a leader... it boils down to how you spin your story when you are writing the admission essay. you can write about being an officer or sgt during your ns and ict, or how you led a small project in your company, or during the activities you do in your free time, you are captain for your team, or you organise a weekly soup kitchen, etc. there are a lot of resources out there that helps you write your mba admission essay(s).

Oh great. I always thought that the leadership experience has to be something from your job. Thanks a lot!
