Which NAS - Synology or Asustor?

Which NAS should I go for? Asustor 302 or Synology 214 Play/+?

I need to use at least 2 surveillance station - Heard Synology now comes with 2 and Asustor has 5 default. So both are ok for me.

Would be nice to use NAS to play movies direct to TV - Asustor has HDMI out which wins over the synology. I guess can bypass using a smart TV or AC ryan player if the synology is truly superior.

Reliability - Asustor 3 years warranty, Synology 2 years


So it now comes down to software and the various apps/stations... I don't have any experience with either so would appreciate some advice here. It seems for now that asustor would be a better deal.

Not sure about Asustor but Synlogy has so many Android and Iphone Apps for you to stream music/video/photos etc setup user account etc its already a win for me

And I probably only listed 5% of what it can do heh

yes, asus has poor customer service, but that shouldn't deter you from getting any asus quality products.

my vote goes to Synology.

I recommend synology too. Although I do not have a asus nas, I am a very happy synology user. I love all the features I get from it, plus I am looking forward to the evernote replacement in 5.1.

Regardless of what you choose, I would suggest you invest properly on the hard disk. I think the reliability of the hard disks directly affects your satisfaction level with the nas.

If we get smart TV like samsung, I see some of them have LAN ports. Do we connect TV --> router and then can access movies from NAS? Is access time quick?


As for hard drives, I'm thinking Hitachi or WD Reds.... What are your thoughts?

Yup.. That's what i'm doing with my LG. Watching movies from my NAS. Tried both via LAN as well as WiFi, connecting to my router. My NAS is also connected to my router.

yes, asus has poor customer service, but that shouldn't deter you from getting any asus quality products.

my vote goes to Synology.

If you want to bypass any media player, Asustor will be a good choice since it comes with HDMI and with a "smart TV" like function that you could use. My personal experience was quite good since it's reduce the need of media player.

For your need is dependent if you're really keen on the HDMI, my experience Synology is good too but it's more for storage and server hosting like VPN, Mail and Web Server.

And for your information, Asustor is not Asus at all, it's just a subsidiary of Asus and warranty is covered by respective distro and not Asus.

I am choosing between Asustor AS3102v2 and Synology DS218.
Mainly use for data backup. Reliability is very important to me.
It will be a bonus if it has HDMI output.

Me but I wouldn't recommend this brand as their technical support suck. That's my personal experience.

I have a 3202T since Nov 2016, so far no reliability issue. My main concern is the harddisk temp (in the high 50s during idle) caused by poor ventilation of the case. I removed the top casing cover and used a usb fan to blow directly on the hdds. Since then no other concern (dust build-up due to open case and aesthetically not pleasing but those don't bother me much). The remote control is pretty useless though.
