I would go with the Ryzen 9 3950X for a better bang for your buck!

threadripper is in a different price bracket from regular ryzen desktop cpus. 3950x will be measurably better if ur looking to have ex intel hedt kind of budget.

I loathe the instability of my Threadripper 2990wx on Linux when stressing all 32C64T in heavy compute tasks (frequent CPU lockups forcing a power cycle), but even then I say get an AMD because of availability unless you can show me a place that has ready stock of the i9-10980XE since supply of Intel's top-end HEDT chips are entirely up to silicon lottery in their fabrication process.

That the reason I got the 2990wx instead of the 9980XE: no reseller in SLS has them and none of them could even promise an estimate on supply.

Don't forget you put 8 core or 16 core still running dual channel ram... that's why threadripper got more lanes
