Asus AC2400 RT-AC87U Dual-band Wireless Gigabit Router
versus
ASUS RT-AX55

Am asking because I bought the Asus AC2400 RT-AC87U Dual-band Wireless Gigabit Router around 4 years ago and M1 is giving this free ASUS RT-AX55 if you sign up for 1 Gbps for 24 months. Is this new router an upgrade or downgrade for me?

It would be an upgrade, considering AX is WiFi 6 (where it supports faster wifi speeds). AC is WiFi 5.

Do note that both are entry level wireless routers.

Thanks for the reply!
I'm confused partly because of info provided on ASUS website:

RT-AC87U delivers the super-fast speeds of up to 1734 Mbps at 5 GHz — even faster than tri-band 3x3 routers — plus class-leading concurrent 600 Mbps speeds at 2.4 GHz for an amazing total bandwidth of 2334 Mbps

ASUS RT-AX55 with a total networking speed of about 1800Mbps — 574Mbps on the 2.4GHz band and 1201Mbps on the 5GHz band

The speed of both band is lower on the ASUS RT-AX55

RT-AC87U:
1734 Mbps at 5 GHz
600 Mbps speeds at 2.4 GHz

ASUS RT-AX55:
1201Mbps at 5GHz
574Mbps at 2.4GHz

So is ASUS RT-AX55 still an upgrade?

IIRC on the AC87U, 1734Mbps is achieved on wireless AC 4x4.
Phones have 2x2 while higher-end desktop / laptop chips have 3x3 maybe 4x4 transmitter/receivers so typical mobile link rates are closer to 866Mbps with real world being 300-400Mbps.

AX55U looks to have 1200Mbps at wireless AX 2x2.
AFAIK all AX devices now are 2x2 as well so you are more likely to hit the theoretical limits of "1200Mbps" than you will ever hit 1734Mbps of wireless AC

So does that mean ASUS RT-AX55 is definitely an upgrade for me?
I'm ashamed to ask again as I don't really understand what you have just tried to explain.

This really depends on the clients in general as others have pointed out. But, I would say, there is a higher chance that your realistic speeds can be better using the AX55.

Only way is to test it out based on your environment. :)

Sometimes, there could also be other factors such as on which one provides a better coverage and stability (which could also be important factors other than speeds).

The tech probably combined both 2.4 & 5.0 into a single SSID.

If you have the admin ID & password, just log in change it yourself.

If you don't, you will have to do a factory reset and redo the setup.

Set them as different SSID names. Some people use numbers, some people use different names. Its up to you on how you want to implement it.

If you don't have devices that need 2.4Ghz band, you can also consider disabling it.

Is always important to set your own SSID and password. Also making sure you disable broadcast SSID function.

Something like ToTo_2G for 2.4G, ToTo_5G for 5G.

As for hiding SSID...dun bother la. Wifi is to empower you, not make it more difficult to use. SSID was created not to be hidden anyway. Just make sure you use WPA2 and a strong password. :D
