Roaming will be a better choice comapred to VPN.
Most VPN works intermittently and gets blocked rather quickly.
If you are just visiting for a while, save the hassle and get roaming with SG SIM cards e.g. CMLink.

You can go Physical shop and get the card immediately.

Or get an e-sim.

I just check with colleagues that I need a china number to contact customer during the trip. So I cannot use data roaming.

CMLink is using Singapore Number, But you can add China Number for $5 per Month.
But as long you have WeChat, usually you can contact customer with this app.

Had to register china number in customer website then they will send the door pin to your china number. If not, I cannot open the door that link to their office.
I should be go there once only. Don't think to add $5 for china number.

I will just buy china sim card from airport then try to use vpn. If cannot then stick with wechat.

Yes, I am befuddled too.
They used to have better roaming add-on, like $18 for 40GB for China usage specifically IIRC.
Got removed EOY 2023...
