Collecting Whisky for investment has alot of hit and misses, usually it best to go for popular brands and aged single malts (though some blended works too). If you are novice (like I am) always stick with the large labels.

I used to buy a fair quantity of Japanese Whisky (10 bottles) and pay tax at customs, usual brands Yamazaki, Hibiki and Nikka some of which I sold at about 80 - 100% profit.

Also picked up a Royal Salute 38 500ml at DFS few years back for $500, I think its gone up by 50% or something. I got this idea to buy this from an article I read in forbes

Again this should not been used as a serious investment tool, its speculative as hell and should be a more of a pastime / chiak bah too eng kind of thing.

Thanks. I am also an novice and still learning. I did some research and seem like Japanese whisky is more popular these days. I always thought whisky should always get those from Scotland. I had a few oversea trip this year and wonder what should i get from DFS.

I sold to my colleague contact he bought a few bottles to drink I believe, for the valued Japanese Whisky (i.e Yamazaki 18) last time the barman told me you sell to them otc also can now I not sure.

The more usual routes would be like Carousell and advertise online. Especially for the Japanese Whisky they move quite quickly but the fad is also dying down.

Hrmm I'm not a fan of the JW Gold series but JW is quite common these days so unfortunately I don't think its worth the effort to sell. Can consider the joys of having some friends over to share it instead

Its abit of a hype as well, thanks to Masters of Malt who crowned some Yamaki as the best whisky in the world. Ironically Yamazaki used the older Scottish Barrels shipped from Scotland to age the whiskies or so I was told and their malts.

Anyway for Japanese Whisky's definitely best to buy from Japan then declare at customs if you are exceeding the limit. For DFS usually can buy the Scottish whiskies but the cheaper collectible ones (below 700) is non existent, there are >$1000 Macallans which big "Maybe" might be a more suitable for investment but again its highly speculative and as novice better rule those out.

If you can find a decent Japanese maker with a age offering for below 250 a bottle in Japan then its worth considering, finding buyers to buy at 400 still possible but becomes less once above 500/600.

I bought my Yamazaki 18 and Hibiki 17 for about 200 each before they got hyped up.

used to be in the alcohol trade, recent years is more of jim murray's whisky bible reviews ( if he rates it well probably can gain some quick 30% profit and ^) or is those china people buying ton loads of certain whisky and keeping it ( most recent was the craigellachie 31 yo (iirc), when it was release rtp was abt 300+400, after being bought over by chinese customers + jim murray's good review its selling about 2-3k + sgd now in the market.
so its more of a hit and miss, buying from dfs usually depends on the kind of bottles , usually they have limited release like the highland park pure sherry and burbon but it gets sold out very fast. for ymzk wise etc best to buy from japan, if u do get lucky to get a bottle of ymzak from dfs , if u do find a seller at most selling for abt 100 sgd profit thats all.

if u wna keep whisky to sell later best if u have some knowledge about basic whiskies and knows how to keep it ( in case ur cork rots before even selling it ), buying johnny walker etc wont suffice. best if look for rare btls of famous brands such as mccallens, dalmore, etc.

Will it cause the cork to break when open?

I kept a bottle lying on its side, whisky unlike wine will degrade the cork especially when it soaked in whisky over a period of time. It says to just wet the cork from time to time by flipping it for a while.

Also keep it in a cool dark place etc

yeap ^ its a good guide to storing whisky , or for really rare and expensive whisky u can get a professional to change the cork for you, but it will come at a price, dont bother with low-medium range whisky.

u good whisky to invest now ( if you can find it at a reasonable price) for me will be glenfiddich 21 yo, ice wine cask or they call it winterstorm edition. but this is just my own opinion take it with a pinch of salt. cheers
