Start of 2019, haven even 3 weeks into 2019, what type of new things you expect they all to tell you. Processor launch can be very fast too. Vega2 release is interesting. Current 2700X still best bang for buck cpu out there.

I don't see how AMD has disappointed on the CPU front at least. If not for AMD, we probably will be stuck with 4/6 cores from Intel still even in 2019. I'm confident AMD will turn the table against Intel and live the glorious AMD FX days once again. Intel is out of ideas sorely depending on the brand and marketing while still charging a stupid premium.

GPU wise, yeah definitely a disappointment. Don't think they compete with nvidia given graphics and gaming is sorely their bread and butter and all focus goes into this. AMD has to manage budget, R&D between CPU and GPU. If CPU is doing well, I'd rather they go all out and crush Intel. It's only good for consumer's. Downside is Nvidia will still be a monopoly unless AMD miraculously has a miracle chip that can perform the same or better at a measuarably lower price.

The Athlon 200GE is actually a great budget chip. About S$83 for 2C/4T and comes with Vega 3 iGPU.

AND it can be unlocked via BIOS update for some MBs.

amd are 1 company up against 2, intel and nvidia
for years they've been struggling in both cpu and gpu markets, their rnd budget is less than both intel and nvidia

naturally they will have to focus their engineers on either cpu or gpu
when they focused their engineers on gpu, they gave you the 4 series - the 4770, 4850 which were superior to what nvidia had at the time. all the way to the 7850, 7870 series they were a better choice to nvidia

then they focused on the cpu, the ryzen processors today are superior to the intel 7 and 8 series

expecting them to beat both nvidia and intel is really impossible, even intel couldn't create a gpu capable of beating amd's offerings and nvidia doesn't have a product that can match amd's barcelona cpus

can we then say that all of them, intel, nvidia and amd are disappointing?

Do you think you can do better?

I personally don't see what is disappointing. You likely have very high expectations, but for a company much smaller than their competitors, there is so much budget you have to compete. Ryzen 2 is still looking very good, while Vega 7 is likely a stop gap solution to improve their competitiveness. Current Vega and Polaris are not even competitive, which leaves them with no product to sell on the GPU side.

Same performance and 100 bucks cheaper, isn't that a good thing? 7nm is still something very new, so it's not cheap. Not to mentioned the HBM2 itself is costly and they gave you 2x. Not that it will benefit greatly in games, but you are getting more for a cheaper price.

Personally, I don't take sides. If one offers good value, I just switch. But in this case, I really think many are asking for the sky. I don't think performance is that great, but its cheaper than the RTX 2080 and performs closely to it, what more do you want?

'cuz 699usd for 2080 bracket in performance (presumably) isn't new at all. it's what we call a "1080ti but 2 years late and for the same launch msrp"

Intel 2nd Gen to Intel 7 Gen performance gain is crap.
Because of AMD, i3-8100 finally become quad core and Intel finally throw out more than 4 cores.

How you expect AMD to fight 2x Giant at the same time.
