Voting in USA is not mandatory. They need to spend a lot of time energising their base so that their base even bothers to vote. Voter turnout means everything.

In Sg voting is mandatory, so there's not much need to spend time energising people who will vote PAP or opp as default. Swing voters mean everything.

and Australia also has compulsory voting, but yet their govt often changes through the decades with no issue.
