Why should i get a better power supply?

What are the reasons to get a better power supply?

I'm currently using an Enermax modular power supply, dont think it has any 80+ rating. But it is still going strong. I seen that 80+ has better power efficiency to save on power?

Is it worth ? Since my computer is on for more than 10 hours a day. Thanks

Use as it, cost saving from switching to higher efficiency PSU can takes years to recover.

Yea, going on $$ savings alone, you'll never recoup the extra cost spent buying a new PSU. Stick with your old, slightly less efficient one.

People get good power supplies because of good reviews and that it is the heart of your system. If it fails, it may take down other parts like the motherboard with it. If you already have a good power supply and its lesser than 5 years old, you don't necessarily need to upgrade.

Meanwhile, check your PSU for bloated caps... However, open up only if the warranty is over.

Oh and please do switch off and unplug the PSU if you want to open it up. Likewise, close it back up if you want to use it again.

PSU have changed a bit in technologies over the years.

Efficiency on the other hand will save some amount of money every month. It isnt much and it will take a few years to cover the cost of the PSU.

It does make a difference if you are powering a high powered rig. Rigs like tri fire or triple SLI or a quad fire or a quad SLI.

Not only that, it has good protections provided like over voltage protection, surge protection and other kinds of safety precaution.

This helps to prevent further damage to your critical components from being burnt. A cheap PSU might not have this features, and if it fails, bringing down the certain components is going to be a big headache.

Enermax makes good reliable psu and even old ones are quite efficient (meeting 80 plus even before that standard exist although low load efficiency is not a match for modern psus) with standard protection features.

Yr model however (if its is the one u listed) is super ancient...

honestly, for a 2007 psu, maybe you should consider a change in psu. I'm not certain it's caps had aged all that well esp the secondaries.
for yr system setup, any 400-500w decent psu will do. ill recommend a superflower hx 500w (modular, good build quality, gold efficiency..)

for non OC intel system with non OC GTX 760, at max gpu/ cpu load (worse case and not real-life)
- total system power consumption before considering psu efficiency
~ 280W (rough estimate given I don't know what other peripherals, fans,etc that you are using)

your old psu running at ~ 1/3 load, maybe 78-80% efficiency (when new), if 78% efficiency
- from mains power consumption= 280/0.78 = 359

if HX500M, running at ~ 54% load, 92% efficiency
- from main power consumption= 280/0.92=304

so you save 0.055 kwh per hour of usage in worse case scenario.

you will unlikely ever recoup the cost of psu in power savings. but yr enermax is too old to be considered safe for your thousand + dollar system. you should change for the safety of your rig

if you are not going to overclock much then stick with the psu that works fine for you.
no point switch to a new psu just because of more power saving than your current unit...

I am using the SuperFlower HX600 80+ GOLD. I was trying to find some reviews on this PSU but surprising I cannot seem to find a solid review of this PSU.

There is quite a bunch of reviews out there.

Not much did on 600w but bigger power types.

Hx is refreshed model of their previous golden green. It was used to be non modular. And now it is semi modular.

They did the same psu for rosewill and kingwin. Iirc they did the same psu for nzxt hale. They are marketed in america instead. And uses their branding.

Go read jonnyguru. Super flower is a solid OEM easily seasonic level, or just one step behind delta. They OEM quite a bit but kingwin is the representative branding for states side

I don't think you need to worry about buying a good PSU unless you will feel good knowing that you have a 80+ GOLD certified PSU working for you like the person above me.

Lets simplify decision for psu buying or changing
Efficient psu may not be quality. On the other hand, quality psu nowadays are generally efficient (better quality parts etc)
Just because something works doesnt mean it is good. If not everyone should just buy icute psu for 15 - 20 dollars. When the psu blows up there goes the user's thousand dollar rig. So dont be penny wise pound foolish. And always consider the quality of the psu before efficiency when buying.

Psu over 5 yrs old.
Change if getting com upgrades of more then 1K$$.
Change if malfunctioning.
Change if not powerful enough for new parts.

Psu over 3 yrs old.
Change if com upgrade over 2k$$
Change if malfunctioning.
Change if not powerful enough.

Psu over 7 yrs old.
Let it RIP already!!!
