1) need to stand really close, awkward for person in portrait
2) stand far and snap then crop later. Not as detail.

Yes. Wide angles are more ideal for landscapes. While there is no one stopping you to shoot portraits with it, the person is going to look fat due to the distortions in the lens.

it is good for small group of ppl also, especially in situation where 1 cannot step bck too much (eg. wall).

$200 can be a little tight la, unless u dun mind going for 2nd hand. Try any of the Canon Ixus series that fit your budget. They more like everyday general purpose cameras.

good or not is depends on the buyer's main requirement.
anyway, i reckon ixus 155 is a good entry cam.
