I have a problem with my iMac 21' wifi.

I have been trying to backup my iMac through Time Machine onto my NAS. The wifi connection would be disconnected after probably 10+gb of data transferred.

it is not just Time Machine back ups but normal copy and paste operations for large files will also give me the same result.

anyone can help?

thanks :s12:

I would do a lot of isolation before troubleshooting this further...

Is the disconnection happens only on the imac or all devices in network?
Have we tried to transfer large files using a different device and does the issue happens too?

There is a wireless diagnostic tool on the mac that you may want to use.

About Wireless Diagnostics

you can monitor the wifi connection using the wireless diagnostics and perform the file transfer, it will detect the the disconnection if any and provide you details.

thanks for the reply

the disconnection happens when i do a large file transfer over the air, on both my iMac and Macbook.

this happens when i leave the Macs to do the file transfer while i'm not using them at all, meaning over night. when i check on it the next morning, it would say the transfer failed because the network drive was disconnected.

i'm using D-Link DVG-N5402SP router provided by Starhub.

I have a strong feeling it's nothing to do with the file transfer at all... alot of disconnection issue reported for this router on starhubcare forum.

maybe tonight before you go to bed, run wireless diagnostics on both mac and monitor the wifi connection till morning without any file transfer and see if it detects any disconnection.

And also I would recommend to set energy saver setting on both mac for "Computer sleep" to Never, you can set "Display sleep" to 15mins or whatever you prefer. "Wake for ethernet access" to be selected too and uncheck "put hard disk to sleep when possible".

i face this issue too and most of the time is the NAS itself abort the transfer.

the NAS either crashes and have to be manually restarted or have to go in and manually delete the half transferred file placeholders.

using DLINK nas.

i am also using D Link NAS, but I have changed the router to a cheapo linksys cisco router and the back up completed.

i have tried with asus rt-n56u and it also works. so i think the problem could be with the router itself.
