Seldom heard of friends using onboard wifi Bluetooth. Is it poor in reception. Or just not popular

Not sure about that but if you have spare PCIe slots, just buy this. With on board bluetooth and up to 800Mbps on 5Ghz wifi. Works great for me and the antenna is also magnetic, meaning can just stick it on the casing itself or put on table top also can.

Cos wired LAN is always better. WiFi takes in extra cost. Onboard WiFi means motherboard that either solder them onto motherboard or preinstalled them on a mPCIe/M.2 slot. Reception wise same as PCIe expansion cards.

Likewise, contemplating whether to go with a Z97 board with wireless-AC or a H97 board with PCIe wireless-AC adapter.

Onboard solution reduces clutter while being marginally expensive compared to PCIe solution.

Yet PCIe solution like Asus's PCE-AC68 offers greater speed with gigabit(s) internet with its 1.3Gbps data rate and to a limited extent, portability.

WiFi's theoretical throughput is always far from real life speed, at least from that of Gigabit LAN.

Yes. But between an onboard solution with theoretical speed of up to 867Mbps and a PCE-AC68 with theoretical speed of up to 1.3Gbps, there should be a noticeable improvement when using a gigabit connection.

Anything less than gigabit though, the 867Mbps should suffice.
