Dig a canal across the base of the pointy part kym?

Probably not. That strip of land isn’t that wide on the map but the terrain there is rough and you would need a very deep canal for large tankers. The cost and engineering would be massive, way bigger than something like Suez. On top of that the political side would still be the same because shipping would still be in the same region and under the influence of the same countries. Most proposals I’ve seen talk more about pipelines bypassing Hormuz rather than digging a canal.

It's not so economical to build a canal just to transport oil.

Technically the other half of the sea does not belong to Iran and if they go to war, then you go to war. They fire at you. You fire back. So you can still continue to ship the oil.

Building a canal does not stop them from firing at you.

Besides the exorbitant cost, the othe problem is that it is still well within the reach of Iran. I mean, the ME is unable to completely defend their O&G industries and other civilian infrastructures against Iran's attacks despite the assistance of western forces in their own lands. Ironically, they have had more success shooting down allied US planes/having them crash than defending against missile barrages.

Neither is the US willing to tie up their navy to escort every single ship passing through nor do they have the manpower to do so despite their size.

So it would end up with the same situation but the ME now a trillion dollars out of the pocket for what's essentially a white elephant.

:(

Why cannot use the red sea from west side of saudi instead?

Saudi Arabia already have such a pipeline across the country and opening into Red Sea. Ships can operate there too.

The main problem is that most of Saudi’s oil fields are located East side where the Straits of Hormuz are located.
So it is an unnecessary added cost and very inefficient to pump oil across the entire length of the country .

Reminds me of how Mehmet II made gigantic rollers to transport his warships over land to bypass the Byzantines’ defenses, then drop them right beside the city and bombard
