Hi all

I have upgraded from Windows 7 Ultimate to Windows 10 Pro previously during the free upgrade from Microsoft.

However, my motherboard spoilt, so change a new one.

But now, I cannot activate my Windows 10 on the same PC with different motherboard.

I can see my PC in my Microsoft account.

Anyone know how to fix it?
Or anyone got Microsoft number to call?

If your license is OEM, that license is tied down to the motherboard. You can still try your luck though (e.g. say you reformatted your drive)

if u linked Ur Windows to your Microsoft account. think u can go to Settings > Updates > Activation and click on Troubleshoot and click on "I recently changed my hardware" or smth like that.

if wanna call hotline make sure u have your installation ID ready. and only available from 9am to 6.30pm iirc.

I used the change hardware option, but it cannot activate.

The installation ID is my Windows 7 Ultimate license key?
Because mine is the upgrade From Windows 7 to Windows 10

What sort of Windows 7 Ultimate license key is.. Retail or OEM type.

For Retail license you can change no issue.

Edit: Which Windows 10 version.

choose activate thru phone. they will give 9 sets of numbers. that's installation ID. then tmr call the Microsoft hotline. u will need the installation ID numbers. probably need to speak to the CSO also.

happened to me recently when I changed my motherboard. had to call them up to activate. but my copy is a retail version bought on Microsoft store.

Thanks for the advice.

Will do so tomorrow.
But activate through the phone, use my Windows 7 key?

Because Windows 10 I believe is they gave digital license tied to account after upgrade.

There is a time limit on this activation method.. via phone on 9 sets of numbers based on installation ID.
Once confirmed on the this method and have to input to activate immediately.. time limit.

It is best to voice call instead.

thru phone they won't ask u for your licence key. they'll ask for installation ID. when u choose activate thru phone the ID will be generated on screen.

yeah I did voice call and spoke to the CSO after the system says my windows has been activated before. CSO still will give you the confirmation ID to key in immediately.

I got my free key during the early period when windows 10 was free for everyone. Now after changing hardware it became inactivated and the same key doesn't work anymore. Is it an OEM key?

Sent from Xiaomi MI MAX using GAGT

Your windows is oem or retail ? The windows 10 key follows the original licence.

i got the key from MS at the time they were giving out free keys to windows insiders just when the pre-release win10 launched

they sent key through email

so i think is oem

used for 1 or 2 years then
changed the whole computer

i linked to ms account but it still says i cannot restore old license
