Windows 10 forced update?

Just now pressed hibernate on my windows 10 laptop, then suddenly remembered that I forgot to upload something and went ahead to power back on my laptop. When on-ing, found out that windows 10 was updating and later was shocked that everything was closed as though I pressed “update then shutdown”... luckily I saved everything and my google chrome is set to restore all tabs from previous session, if not I would have lost a lot of stuff...

Any of you guys experienced this? Windows/Microsoft forcing you to update

Win 10 default setting is auto download and install for updates.

I have disabled auto-updates but even clicking on "check for updates" will auto download and install without asking.

Windows 10 will still force to do essential updates although those non-critical or non-essential will be disabled.

I got a new NUC and did everything you mentioned above (after hearing horrify update stories) before 1st time enabling wifi for Internet connection but still surprised kena forced to update and reboot applying the update but heng nothing went wrong yet.

On post-1607 versions of win10, MS have added additional mechanism to self-enable update services even if you have set it to disabled.

The only way to lock down is to disable not just the update service, but also every accompanying service related to connecting to MS's servers, changing GPO settings, and modifying registry. Or you can reformat the computer to 1607 and never update it ever again if you're into that.

If you have a firewall, you can block all Windows Update traffic on it. But the list of Windows update sites is extensive.

Or you can go to group policy editor and edit the windows update location to some bogus IP or 127.0.0.1.

If user types "udpate" in start menu, "Check for updates" is listed first followed by "Windows Update settings". Accidentally pressing enter without arrowing to the second item will cause Win10 to re-enable wuaserv. Sneaky MS

I agree. I had to revert to my backup copy of the OS made in November thanks to the stupid 1809 update. That update was soo buggy and slow, my macros to auto switch and enable screens on the TV or other monitors all failed as a result due to the OS being slow to respond to the commands unless I increase the delay between clicks.
Also, my sound card disappears when I use update 1809.

Even more sneakily, Windows 10 build 1809 purposely REMOVES all your system restore backups including making my OS partition backup not appear in System Restore.

I had to go to recovery and finally find the hidden option to revert to the old 1803. But some traces of 1809 remained and it made my macros still fail randomly due to the OS being slow.

I used the system restore "System Image Restore Point" that I created and just need to update a few software after that to restore Windows back to normal. My internet cookies and all were still intact since I can still use my web.whatsapp page even though I had changed phones after my backup was done.


As mentioned on one of the tech news, if you click on "Check for Updates" it means you choose to be a level 2 beta tester or something like that. If you prefer not to be a beta tester, just let Windows update by itself at times without you manually pressing to update Windows.

I am now back to 1803 with the automatic updates and not to 1809 automatically. And I turned on the delay updates for 1 month as well to give Windows a chance to mature and let other people be guinea pigs.

Making me beta test a laggy and slow OS for a retail consumer product. Extremely disrespectful.

That's what happens when you layoff the entire QA and make devs do QA tasks. Ownself check ownself, major release every 6 months, where got time to do proper testing?

Why pay employees to test when consumers can test every Tuesday? Win10 is great for cutting edge consumers, turd of a mess to manage for enterprises.

Still using build 1511. Not sure if want to update to 1607. Think you can download from some 3rd party website for the older build 1511 or 1607 win 10 iso.

Still supported for enterprise. Anyway, it's a non-issue for those who disable updates

You are welcome to use another OS Linux like where no recent hardware actually works because of complete lack of drivers.

Or where upgrading a simple driver or application package requires upgrading the entire OS.
