I bought a supposedly legit hard-copy Dell OEM booklet sealed in a plastic envelope with a product key sticker that I'm supposed to peel off and paste on my "Dell computer", and "after replacing the system board" I am supposed to activate Windows by keying in this product key.

Paid around US$19 or so for it if I remember correctly. I feel a bit safer with a hard-copy item than 1 of those "digital delivery" type send you serial by email nonsense.

My understanding is that it has to be retail version PLUS it needs to be linked to a Microsoft account with a Microsoft email address. I was trying to use a Windows 10 Pro product key I used on a motherboard that I'd sold off, on the build I am using now ... there is an option under activation problems that says they might still be able to activate if I changed motherboard if I sign in to my Microsoft account, but when I keyed in the email address I am pretty sure I used, it didn't work, so maybe I missed a step somewhere to link the product key to my Microsoft account. But I got 2 more spare brand new unused legit Windows 8 Pro licences (which can also be used to activate Windows 10 Pro) so I used 1 of those in the end.

Maybe you should look it up, how to link your product key / licence to your Microsoft account.

Actually, they're no different. If the seller is a reputable seller, the license is safe, does not matter it's physical or digital.

Usually, cheap and legit license can be from these source:

- MSDN account offer free license keys, so some people will sell them online. My own MSDN account offer 10 keys for each version. I can sell them if I want, but I never. MSDN keys are the best, since it can use for all version of Windows like shown below

- licenses from DELL are OEM type, sometimes Microsoft dun allow to download Windows ISO from these license ( of course you can download from 3rd party link so does not really matter. OEM keys can usually be used for 1 version of Windows.

- Since Micrsoft strategy is to push its users to use Windows 10, so all Win7, Win 8 license keys can be used to activate W10

You can. Note down your license key, deactivate the license using this command : slmgr /dlv

Hi, scdkey keys are legit. I brought 2 window 10 and a office 2016 from them and they work.

Actually, they're no different. If the seller is a reputable seller, the license is safe, does not matter it's physical or digital.

Yes you should be expecting that they are selling MSDN keys, but how do you know if the seller sold this particular key only to you, and not to XX other people as well? You can’t. And it’s not that it won’t work ... there is an activation limit, and it will work until that limit is detected, then Microsoft will proceed to deactivate the licence on every computer that used this particular product key. I would know how it works ... I bought what was supposed to be a legit retail box of Windows 7 Ultimate and it worked for about a year then 1 day the wallpaper went black with the non-licenced copy wording on all 4 corners.

There are reviews on this scdkey.com that the key they got is used, but those are games. I expect it to be the same when it comes to Microsoft stuff. As I mentioned above, it works fine until activation limit is detected. Even if the seller think he is smart and sell the same key to a number of people below the activation limit, if any buyer go and try to activate on more than 1 computer, that is out of the seller’s control.

Yes, you can. I savage the win 7 license from my 5 yrs old company old PC and used for new PC. Worked like a charm

M$ probably doesn't really give a hoot about consumers using grey market sources because as long as people use Win10, they'd be happy to siphon all dat sweet sweet personal data

Why not just purchase the license key from reddit Microsoft marketplace?

Bought Win 7 keys there and use it while installing Win 10. Working like a charm.
