Seeking some advice.. i have an asus i7 running windows 7.

used to be ok until recently the 'Windows is not genuine' text kept appearing on my desktop. . I tried reformatting it.. it went away for a while, but came back..

then i tried to follow some steps on the internet to get rid of it (e.g. download some software etc.), i managed to get rid of it, but then it came back again recently!

I'm quite sure my windows is genuine .. how do I fix this? I don't have the CD to reinstall windows again.. help.

thanks all!

Did you change any hardware or anything ? You can try doing the online validation. If not, call Microsoft helpline up, just get your license key ready. You should see the Microsoft Windows license sticker at the side or back of your desktop.

Thought you were mentioning desktop. For laptop, the Microsoft License sticker would normally be at the bottom, you may need to turn the laptop upside down to see it.

The change of harddisk might cause Windows to get that error.

Go to Control Panel / System and Security / System . This should give you an overview of your computer settings and so on. Somewhere at the bottom, you will see the "Windows Activation". There should be some button there to activate it.

Cool! . I believe that Microsoft placed in a very restrictive licensing program which aims to prevent people from installing Windows on more than 1 computer. They do this by checking the unique identifiers on some of the hardware components such as harddisk, motherboards and the like. Once one or more of those change, Windows would assume you are installing on a different machine and thus it required you to validate again.

sorry to hijack ur thread

abt 2 years ago, i bought a win 7 home premium from someone here, it was too cheap n too good to b true but i still bought it. during 1st year still ok but starting last year, i have similar problem as TS, keep prompting that my windows is not genuine. last week I finally format my hdd n reinstall the OS but again when i tried to activate my windows, same error came out. i believe i bought pirated windows as it was cheap n the seller disappeared. I wanna call up microsoft to ask n maybe even check on this issue but will i b accused or even charged for buying pirated software? is there some website to check if the cd-key is genuine?
