Windows XP cannot recognize new HDD

Just bought a 2.5" 16MB/7200rpm HDD to replace the old one in my Thinkpad T61.
This time I like to install Windows XP as the OS. However, the XP installation program says cannot detect any HDD installed. Vista installation can detect the HDD.

What is wrong? Is it XP cannot detect HDD in NTFS?

How can I reformat the HDD to FAT32 using the XP installation?
Or can anyone upload the ISO of a XP boot disk?

Did some research.
Seems like nothing to do with file system, but has to do with XP cannot support SATA during installation.

It's not possible to install XP on a laptop that have Vista previously. I tried that on my netbook before. However I can install Win7 to replace the Vista.

There shouldn't be any problem installing XP with the proper SATA driver. However you will face other hardware driver issues. Unless you can find XP drivers for e.g. graphics card, modem, ethernet, etc.. for your machine, it is not advisable to install XP. Vista driver and Win 7 drivers are compatible. Also Win 7 will have the Sata driver for installation.

Sata connection first came about with the 865 chipset hybrid mb. When installing XP must press F6 when prompted to load in the Sata drivers via floppy drive. That was 10 years ago. It will be a problem with laptops unless you can load via thumbdrive but don't have this option in XP.

It isn't about SATA driver but AHCI mode. if the notebook let you get into SATA mode selection with IDE option, WinXP has no problem install to SATA HDD. try that countless time with P35/ICH9/ICH10 chipset.

You should stay away from Win XP. The extended support for Win XP ends Apr 2014.
After that date, Microsoft will no longer provide security updates to the OS.
You can be sure that hackers will fully exploit this vulnerability after this date.

Solved the problem with the following steps:
Set BIOS to Compatibility or IDE mode.
Installed XP and SP 1, 2, 3.
Installed chipset drivers.
Installed intel storage drivers for sata support.
Reboot and set BIOS back to AHCI mode.

It works!
