Hehe, I have the same encounter today, went past a wine shop near my office during lunch today, they offered me to taste their Wirra Wirra red n white for free. Didn quite like it... And I feel proud of walking out the door empty-handed!!

Less than 20 pax in the masterclass... Seems not many ppl interested or the day is still early?

yo Hkm i'm here too. i think everyone was late, so the timings snowballed. i was at the moss wood class too, after attending the italian class. think overall the event is very good, compared to wine fiesta, but turnout seems pretty poor, which is a pity.

wanted to book an anniversary dinner at Prive on their free corkage days (mon & tues) as mentioned on their site.

just got a reply from their reservation office, their corkage policy has been revised for december and the whole month there will be no free corkage....grrrrrrr.....

Tiring day had tasted 50-60 wines which is my max. Some other nice wines I wish to taste but not enough times. I tried the blind Pinot Noir tasting and what surprised me was my favourite Pinot comes fr Austria. Good that I have a bottle of that. But very interesting and I always like to taste wines blind and it let you taste without prejudice.

you can try keystone at stanley street, modern european dining, really good quality and presentation. mon, tues are chef's nights with special menu and chef feedback. you can also bring your wines as long as they are not on their list, which i'm sure you have no problem with! but you can only bring one bottle for two peeps. check their site or call to enquire more, they are rather friendly.

Gattorpardo at fort canning also has nice ambience. every tues is byo, no limit on bottles.

Cool, another to add to the list of decent restaurants with free corkage days. Hopefully this practice can be more widespread among local establishments.

As I mentioned earlier, yesterday's WRX Wine Journey was terrific, bar a few things that could have been done better. Just a pity that with the poor response, not sure if they'll be holding it again. Holding it at a hotel really helped, with the staff really helpful and attentive, and water, still or sparkling, always available within an arm's reach thanks to sponsors San Pellegrino.

There were 7 masterclasses in all, but with all of them being back to back, I could only manage to go for 3, which is just as well as I can only drink/learn that much in one afternoon.

I went for the Italian Wine class, with an Italian sommelier and local wine personality Tan Ying Hsien; the Moss Wood class, with winemaker Mr and Mrs Keith Mugford; and lastly the 'Stickies and Puddings' dessert wine class, with Local Nose nose and Sommelier Britta Giese.

All in all I think I tried about 30+ wines, which was a bit too much for me. Tongue got really tired after that. On a positive note, I finally started spitting during tasting, which was just as well given the number of wines on show. It helped that during the masterclasses we all got our own spitting cup, except for the dessert wine one.

Ok trying to keep this short, among the nicer and more interesting wines I tried were:

Italian wine class:
2008 Castello Di Volpaia Chianti Classico
2009 Allegrini Corte Giara Valpolicella Ripasso
2008 Elizabeth Foradori Teroldego
2005 Cerretto Zonchera (Barolo)

Gruner wine tasting:
2010 Leth Gruner Vetliner Scheiben

Italian wine tasting:
2005 Brunelli La Martoccia (Brunello)

Dessert wine masterclass:
NV Ratafia de Champagne Henri Giraud
2004 Tchida Zweigelt Strohwein

The gruners were pretty nice, though I don't think I'll be able to tell them apart from German rieslings in a blind test - there's the same minerality and clean, delicate flavours of honeys and pears. I think the ones I tried would be generally considered off-dry styles; I don't think there were any that would be considered 'trocken' by German standards.

Read somewhere that this varietal has a signature nose of white pepper? Don't think I detected that.

Oh I left out, I tasted a Penfolds St Henri Shiraz (2007) during lunch, as well as their 'Autumn' riesling, very nice. The St Henri had that balance of fruit and structure, giving it some elegance. Yeah, this event definitely has the big-name sponsors.

I'm ok for a Dec outing, don't think I'm going anywhere soon.
