would anyone be interested in a small wine-themed gathering?
maybe something like everyone bring a bottle of wine within a similar category like wines from a specific price range/a specific variety from any country or wines from a specific region.

then we taste them blind. it is not a competition but just to excite our palates and minds as we explore new types of wines.

anyone is keen on this ideal

@ikileo
It was a 2006 KG Auslese, even the vintage is just so so / a bit too young , still have nice balance with mineral (nose smells like gasoline ) / sweetness / acidity. I still have few bottles (HV) ...so really tried to see how it is / aging potential .

The bubblies was interesting...it tasted much better than any brut vintage / brut NV before. I was told that ....2003 was a very difficult vintage for champagne but Louis Roederer still managed to produce vintage champagne for 2003. As there is no Cristal (their flagship with price tag close to S$500 each ) for 2003, all the best cru gone to the 2003 vintage champagne....I tried to google any similar story / gossip about this bottle but no luck so far. :)

@ nautilus
99 Bahans my brief TN
The nose was stunning, complex, powerful with all typical Pessac Leognon : earthy / mineral / tobacco / red fruit.
Medium body , on palate and aftertast was very smooth
I would say it is not fully opened yet even this 99 vintage is ready to drink now but as per the colour / rim , it can be even better next 18-36 months. :)
@delusion: Thanks for your TN. The Bahans looks like a very good bottle. Very surprising that a second wine has not fully opened up after >10 yrs. Care to share where did you get your bottle from?

Sorry, I don't have good idea as it was from my friend.
But I suppose Bahans 1999 still available in most of cellars in Singapore market.

Ok, as we wait for more people to express some interest, even if it’s a really small group I have no problem with that. Here is the premise, you can suggest more stuff too:

Location: A free corkage place with food (perhaps a Botak Jones, all the way to a dim sum place)

Theme:
Options
- Any wine between $30 - $40 (regular price)
- A bottle that overdelivered in quality
- German vs Aussie Rieslings.
- Syrah/Shiraz (100% or syrah based) from any part of the world
- Left Bank Bordeaux Blends (Cabernet Based) from any part of the world
- Sparkling wines outside of Champagne
- Non-Rhone/Bordeaux/Burgundy/Champagne wines from France
- Tempranillo based wines
- Sangiovese based wines

These are just a few. Naturally all these options will have a price range for the wines, ‘cos it’s not fair if someone brings a $100 bottle while someone gets a $20 bottle. So like a decent range of $30-$50, hopefully, would be ok for you guys.

Any more suggestions? Or just these are fine?

and i am going to need some input from those who are interested.

is it a good idea to open this up to those who want to join but are not bringing wines? because i don't think I want to finish an entire bottle worth of wine by myself if everyone is bringing a bottle each.

on the flip side, i understand some may have reservations about people joining in to just drink free wine. unless someone pre-buys the wines according to the theme and the participants just split the cost, but then this is be a single person's purchase decision and not a range of wines that show each participants style and choice of wine.

any input on this?

@iklleo: i think it'll be better if 2 pax share the cost of 1 bottle (1 bottle for 2 pax), or you can buy a range of wines and we'll split the cost according to the receipt. Happy to do either ways.

i also favour the 2 to a bottle and we can share the cost. for me i will not be able to choose a good wine which is situable as not well train yet. i'm ok with any place. i will bring my GF along so that we can learn.

ok so let's keep this simple and mainstream and affordable (relatively)

which one would be more appealing to you?

1) 3 or 4 Shiraz from specific sub-regions in Australia (Barossa, Hunter Valley, Margaret River etc...)
2) 3 or 4 Syrah/Shiraz based wines from different countries (Australia, France, Chile etc...)

Criteria: The wines all need to have decent scores (from online research) and must be between $30-$50.

so whichever the case, i will buy and choose the wines to bring. so whoever else is interested to join please let us know. you don't have to pick and choose since i will be doing it for you. and it's shiraz/syrah which should be very familiar and comfortable with most SG drinkers.

I would prefer option 2.

find something western bah. If you wanna keep it cheap, Saizeriya has $5 corkage but poor glasses.
you want to move up a little bit there's Bistro 103. Also $5 corkage per bottle but better glasses. The food is more expensive compared to Saizeriya (around the $20 region, plus minus few dollars for mains). as for spicy, don't think it will be too spicy lah, depends on the producer and region as well. Just avoid lots of pepper in your food.

the other alternative is to head down to Botak Jones and just eat there, but have to bring own glasses.

any more suggestions?
