I not a wine drinker but occasionally drank wine. Some noob questions, does wine taste better when it is kept for a long time and is it more expensive when it is kept long? Cos I got a gift which I have kept and thought of giving it to a friend who threw a party but hold back as I do not know what is the value. This bottle of wine that I have is Merlot 2002, Lodi California. Should be 6 years old if based on the marking. Any kind soul can answer the questions?

Thx n cheers!

I did have a section on wine aging on my 1st post on the 1st page, do check it out.

The long story short is that and older wine doesn’t necessarily mean a better wine. It depends on many factors. Some types are wine are meant for aging, certain wine producers produce wines mean for aging as well or of a certain quality that it has to age for several years for optimal consumption. Some are meant to be popped and poured on the spot.

Another aspect of aging wines is that you have to store it in dry, cool (about 10-12 degrees, a fridge is bad), dark and stable place. Keeping you wines in a cabinet in your living room is a bad idea, because the average room temperature of Singapore air is enough to ‘cook’ your wine and oxidize it into vinegar in just a matter of a few years.

As for your 2002 Merlot, Lodi is not the wine producers name but rather the region in California. In the Lodi region there are several producers which one does your wine come from? The name should be on the label. Wine aging is a bit like a ‘game’ because there will always be an optimal drinking period for wines. What people do is that they buy the wines and taste it and from there decide whether it’s worth keeping to let it age.

But do tell us the name of the wine producer so we can do some research and find out some reviews.

Welcome back everyone, updated my blog finally after the new year break. 7 wines this week! Read 'em up and go out and try new things at low cost!

Check first post for blog link.

FYI: For a 2 day promotion period CARREFOUR is selling its PENFOLDS Bin 389 Cabernet Sauvignon Shiraz for $76. This usually retails in Carrefour at $80+ and at Cold Storage at just over $100. PENFOLDS Bin 389 is also known as the "Poor Man's Grange". For those who don't know, Penfolds is the famous and extremely popular winery from Australia whose 'Grange' wines sell for hundred of dollars.

finally updated my blog with two posts. Jacob's Creek Semillon Sauvignon Blanc and an Argentinian Viognier :)

check it out at wineofthepeople.livejournal

I still do take requests if you want to try out a wine up to $25. Just inform me the name, year and purchase location and I'll head down to buy it, if possible.

And I had just finished conducting a basic wine intro & appreciation in NUS Business School. That was fun.

Hi ikileo. Have u tried the Everyday wine that is available at supermarkets. I think it is the cheapest wine that is available at only around $11.

Also, are the wines in the smaller bottles any different from those in the normal sized ones? I'm the only drinker at home so i guess it would be prudent to get the smaller bottles.

yeah everyday $11 is indeed the cheapest 750ml bottle I've seen. I'll test it out to see if it delivers on that price tag.

smaller bottles (or commonly known as half bottles) are the same as their normal sized brothers if and only if they are of the same producer and series. Meaning everything on the label has to be the same except for the volume. The only problem I have foreseen is that I have tried some of them (not all) and so far they've only done half bottles for entry level wines that somehow do not deliver that much value on their price tag.

Not that they're lousy, but I expect a little more. Another issue is that the variety of half bottles in Singapore are really limited where we do not usually get them except in certain retail stores and in supermarkets. They're usually basic drinking so I guess if you're not too fickle a half bottle could save you that bit of cash, but you will run out of half-bottles to try because they're only so few of them.

i've updated the 1st page with more articles. They are found on the 3rd post. The 1st new topic is on 'Good/Bad/Flawed Wine'...i'll be uploading two more articles today 'Buying Wine' and 'Wines in Restaurants'.

As for reviews on my blog, there has been a long hiatus, primarily due to the enormous amount of schoolwork I have. But I am stocking up and searching for under $25 rieslings for a head-to-head riesling taste-off

i can probably only organize one in may onwards 'cos that's is when I'm more free.

as for nebbiolo wines, their most famous form are Barolo & Barbaresco wines from Piedmont, Italy. You can get those at pretty much an high-end wine store. Culina at Dempsey Hill stocks several Barolos.

Italian Food & Wine Pte Ltd at 48 Craig Road www.italianfoodwine.com are distributors and retailers of premium Italian wines. They have a good selection of those Nebbiolo wines. Keep in mind both Barolos & Barbaresco are wines that command high prices that usually start from $100 - $200 and are meant for long aging due to their high & harsh tannins when the wines are young.

If you do buy one, do tell us the name, vintage and tasting notes. Good luck!

I finally visited the Absolutely New Zealand store in Sunset Way. They bring in various new zealand stuff including a good selection of wines. Plus they're having a moving out sale so you can get loads from stuff that are 30%-40% off starting at $20.

You can get Pinot Noir from Central Otago, New Zealand at discount prices as well. For those of you who don't know, Central Otago is one of the most famous regions in the world producing Pinot Noir wines. Google it.

a very interesting and informative thread bro.

I myself am fairly interested in wine. Due to the exposure to wines during work/school and also my friends who enjoy wine. However, still very new to wine as I only can drink but don't really know what I'm drinking.

Like how to even taste the fruittiness of the wine etc.. hahha
