hey thanks to everyone for this eye opening day.

my Chateau Montus only started to be approachable the next day hahaha...

on a side note, i bought '09 Bott-Geyl Riesling Grand Cru, Schoenenbourg, Alsace from Caveau (Shaw Centre) for $45.

Very very young. Good quality but i agree with their website, it's rather austere in its youth. I'm drinking it now 20 hours later and now it's more integrated but the producer mentioned that it can keep for 15-20 years. I posted it on my instagram feed, be my follower!

might grab some more to keep!

Reign, I'm glad you and your wife enjoyed the 2005 Smidge Zinfandel I brought. (As it is not my style of wines actually ) Well I bought from WEA some times back and I think they should have the current release 2006 in stock.

Supermarket Wines under $30.

What do you guys think? It will be interesting to have them served blind, plus more people can join and after that we can post it here to show if there any good values.

specifically supermarkets because the large majority of the mainstream wine drinkers in SG get them from supermarkets and for the forum lurkers it will be easy to obtain

Maybe some guidelines to make it more 'stringent' to sieve out the true values:
1) Must be from a supermarket chain (we can include marks & spencer, isetan supermarket, carrefour as well)
2) Must be less than $30 at full retail price
3) To help the new wine drinker let's limit it to the most common varietals: Reds must be shiraz/cab/merlot/bdx blend | whites must be: chardonnay/riesling/sauvignon blanc

what do you guys think? is it something you would be keen in? I would like to find out which supermarket wine really punches above its weight.

Sounds like a good idea! But do we have to do 'supermarket' wines? Can it be a wine from a wine shop that is less than $30? And can the varietal be outside the usual ones, so that we can have a range of tastes?

This is what we can do: if everyone can email their wines before hand, we can prepare a tasting sheet, and then we can do note taking and also record the name, price and place of purchase after the tasting.. We can then compile the list and know the QPR for some of the price can be really good!

more than half of consumers in Singapore (source: 2011 Wine in Singapore report by Euromonitor) buy their wines from supermarkets and supermarket retailers wine revenue is growing year on year. most consumers unfortunately may not want to find the specific outlet or wine store to buy their specific wine. most people are just looking to get a bottle along the way to a dinner or a last minute decision.

most consumers are familiar with the usual varietals and may not be keen to venture out of their comfort zone so if we can provide a few value options of wines they are familiar with instead of figuring out which Shiraz from which country from which producer to buy, that would help them a lot.

lastly the wine is meant to be blind so we don't know what each other is bringing beforehand so that we don't have any preconceived notions of what the wines are or whether you are biased with/against a certain producer etc...

only after tasting all then we reveal what they are and then we 'Ohhhh and ahhhh'

i think what you are looking for would be for an introduction to wine varietals and that's good and we can have that for subsequent sessions where to go back to basics.

I tend to agree with starhappy's idea of $30 wines anywhere.. reason being I think supermarket wine selection is rather limited and there are chains like Straits Wine, Wine Connection etc that are very accessible and easily found, compared to stores like Carrefour or M&S. And though there are decent supermarket wines, they tend to be too safe and generic sometimes. But I understand ikileo's point of targeting the supermarket customer first, maybe we can do the $30 wine anywhere thing for the next round. Yes, only common varietals should be considered, since we're talking about the mass market consumer. This will be pretty tough man, to find a decent $30 wine at standard price, when I only buy during promotion!

i am sure there are some brokers or downstream retailers that may carry it.

find out who is the main importer and distributor in SG and just buy from them.
