Weekend's here again!

I'll be opening the Chateau Lescombes 1996 and Chateau Cormeil Figeac 2006 for the Yuan Xuai Jie dinner on Sunday with my family.

Good chance to explain to them the difference between a left bank and right bank Bordeaux and also explore what 10 years of difference makes to a wine.

What are you guys drinking for the last 3 days of the CNY?

Alas! My plan to open two bottles of wine from my cellar didn't materialise as the dinner comes with free flow of beer and wine.

They were serving the Bilyara Shiraz, a second label from the Wolf Blass family. A pretty young, fruit driven, and sweet to the tastebud. Not too bad for large occasions when paired with Chinese food. I tried with the yu sheng, sharks fin (with lots of pepper), suckling pig, and steamed pomfret. Goes quite ok. Not fantastic, but reasonably well. I figured this wine would be between $18 to $22 in the supermarket?

Which brings me to another point: at a lower price range, I find Shirazs more 'consumable' than other reds, especially Cab Sauv. I tasted and tested a few Cab Sauvs between $20 and $30, and almost none of them can make it, but most Shirazs (and some Merlots) did ok.

Probably has to do with the aging potential and popularity of the CS in the market.

A very broad generalization here; left bankers have more Cab Sauv, while right bankers use more Merlot.

As a result, the left bank wines tend to be more robust and structured aka masculine in style, while the right bankers tend to be more soft and charming aka feminine.

It's a rough guide, and there are many exceptions to be found along the way.

Another rule of the thumb is as the left bank wines have higher percentage of CS< they have better caging potential than the right bank ones. So if you are looking for a wine for early drinking, you should do better with a right bank Bordeaux as compared to a left bank.
