ofease - Singapore online shop: Printer HP LaserJet Pro 400 M401n / M401d / M401dn / M401dw Printer

i'm thinking of buying a network enabled printer, hp pro 401 dw, but dunno if that will work as standalone? cos they list another $300 to buy a print server.

HP Jetdirect ew2500 802.11b/g Wireless Print Server(J8021A)| HP® United States

does anyone had a brief idea?

The 401dw has both wireless and ethernet connectivity and so can work as a standalone. You will need the wireless server if (a) you do not want the printer directly connected to your server for security reasons; or (b) you want to use the printer in an area without existing ethernet or wireless connectivity.

caveat - I don't have the 401dw though I do have a consumer printer on a home wireless network.

Consumer grade printers have built-in wireless functionality... i got a canon mg3570 (iirc) which is a wireless printer and a scanner in a compact form factor...

What security concerns would there be?

For example, instead of connecting the server and printer directly via a USB connection which may mean the server and printer being in the same room, you can move the printer to a different physical location and use the print server for the wireless connectivity if there is no existing wired or wireless connectivity.

i intend to put the printer just outside my room in the living room, so that i can print from my room desktop or the living room laptop.

i had a home wifi already working.

no need wires and no need the extra print server rite?

If your printer has WIFI, just connect to your router with static IP address. Install printer driver in PC and laptop and make sure your supply the IP address of your printer during the driver installation. You can put the printer anywhere that it can connect to the router and a power supply.

Yes, no wires or extra print server required as that printer has wifi connectivity.
