Work or Study ? Or Both ?

Hi Everyone!

Would like to get some advices from you guys!
Here's some background :
- grad from a local poly from dip in marketing with a gpa of 3.63
- had a year of experience in events company
- trying to figure out if i should study/work/both!

Problem :
- i got an offer letter from SIM for PT logistic and supply chain, as i previously wanted to try out the industry. But i have got no experiences, i did not continue to pursue marketing as i want to have 2 diff certification to place me on an advantage upon grad so that i can choose either marketing or logistic.

- I have been going for interviews for logistics company to get a full time job, however as i am a fresh grad, the pay usually range about 1.9k, which i feel that the amount may be quite tough for me to handle if i have to pay my PT uni and others expenses.

- Also, i will be paying for my school fees as i do not want to financially burden my parents.

- Hence, i am in a dilemma if i should continue study OR work OR Both(Full time work/part time studies)

Can someone give me some advices based on your experiences, so i get make a better decision.

I assume the degree course you are talking about is from UniSIM.
I believe there are government subsidies and you will be eligible to apply for tuition loans and bursaries to help lighten your finances.

I suggest you try to focus on studies for your 1st year or at least 1 semester to test water on whether you are able to handle and score for your studies.
If you are able to handle the studies easily, then perhaps you may consider a job concurrently.

Another suggestion is talk to your parents regarding the study and keep an open mind. Regardless how tough it is, if your parents are willing to help you in your financial needs for your studies, accept it. It is their commitment to you as your parents.

hmmm.. your three options..

1) Study only.
Assuming youre taking the offer and doing part-time but without working? makes little sense to me leh.. then what are you gonna do with all the free time? hahah. plus youre paying on your own.. if study part-time without working.. got no subsidy and its quite tough on the wallet

if study full-time another course.. also ex.

2) Work only.
Good cause you can focus on your work first and stabilize yourself first before deciding to add on your studies ontop of that. see if you can cope with just work itself first. if cant even cope then probably not good to add in studies in your busy schedule.

3) Work + Study.
I guess this makes the most economical sense since youre paying on your own. Working + studying qualifies you for the gov subsidy which reduces your tuition fee by at least half. its slightly tougher than just work only/study only. but you save time! and money too.

while is good to have a wide open certification, you also need to bare in mind if your future education allows you to value add to your work experience.
if it does not, chances are you will start fresh and from a low position coupled with low pay.

take for example my case, i'm been a document controller for the past 6 years, now that i want to switch over to insurance industry as a policy administrator, chances are tough and few.
if worst come to worst, i'm not able to switch, the 2 options i have in mind are resumed my current position (with no career progression, most until lead/senior, salary cap at 3.5k~3.8k) or i go to accounting and start from 2.2k (last drawn 2.6k).

as you can see, getting a degree is the manageable part what is not manageable is that you may not necessary end up in a career choice which you really want.
luck do play a heavy part in whether you end up in a company willing to develop you or end up in a company providing a stagnant environment in terms of progression.

After some consideration, I had decided to decline the offer as i guess i am not ready to commit myself to full time working and part time study (feel kinda stress.ahhhh)

& the good news is SMU called me for an interview for my appeal. Hence, I will be going for it and do my best. In an event, if the interview did not goes well, I will be going to work for a year before deciding if i should continue pursuing a degree.
