In that case, won't recommend gyw leather shoes for your needs. Look for Hush Puppies or Cole Hann. These 2 brands have cushion (Cole Hann uses Nike technology).

St Crispin's. Wonderful example of a non-leather sole that still looks elegant.

If only Vibram or Topy made sole protectors like these...

I would think that a key difference lies in the fact that the shoes were built to accommodate vibram soles vs adding on vibram soles after-market on leather sole shoes.

Personally feel that such sole offering (e.g. carmina tomir) gives the optimal balance between durability without compromising the sleek profile of a dress shoe. However, for whatever reasons, they are hardly offered by most makers and typically only available from MTO upwards.

Those ARE vibrams.
Holy shiat. You know which cobbler stocks them?

I agree. I guess most shoemakers are purists and belong to the ONLY RAW LEATHER SOLES group of thought.

I think what stood out to me is that the vibram threads are pretty interesting as well. You don't see such patterns often.

I hear you. Shukey stocks quite a good variety across a few brands as well. But I have yet to see those particular threads..

Will be dropping by kips and kwiks to install sole protectors for my shoes soon. Workmanship from Shukey has been a bit lacking recently. The vibrams don't adhere to the shoe, even after bringing it back to them to remedy..

I have those and another vibram model from on some of my shoes. One is supposedly slightly thicker than the other. I'll post pics tomorrow.

From the little understanding I have, heel slip could be from a multitude of reasons, ranging from wrong size to just a badly fitting last.

And yes it's a huge gamble buying shoes online. Explains the many 'what is this brand's sizing like as compared to another brand' posts heh.

After much reading, and testing Loake (Robinson) Barker (Metro), I finally went over to Carmina @Capitol. Was flabbergasted by the service of the ang moh there. Patient and answered all my noob question, allowed me to try different last.

As I have suspected, some of the lasts really didnt fit me, the closest one is forest last uk8.5. I tried Barker 463 last at size 8 seemed more fitting.

I really felt like getting a simple black oxford calf from Carmina, and from there learn as much as possible then possibly get my brown shoes online. However I read that Carmina is quite mark up in SG, abit hesitant.

Any advice from a budding shoe enthusiast? My aim is to get good quality shoes which will last me at least 5 years with care.

Thanks

Top pic: Vibram half sole done 5 months ago by Martin
Bottom pic: Different model Vibram half sole done yesterday by another guy

I did both at Holland Village Mr Minit. Martin used to be the cobbler there, but he went over to Westgate. Price is $40-50. I know from the other posts and from my friend that I can get it done cheaper elsewhere, but Holland V is near my workplace.

Vibram actually has a huge range, but Mr Minit stocks these 2. You can see more at the Vibram catalog: https://www.vibram.info/vibramrepair/catalogo.php?id_categoria=5&livello=2&categoria_master=4

The Gap is closing. If you like the service in the store then just get from them

You will need to rotate a couple of pairs btw. If u wear the same "good quality" pair for days on end, it will still die fast
