A man should not be so "precious" about his apparel. It just takes away the "manliness".

Life happens, and if something gets scruffed or damaged in the process, it only adds to the "story". A good example is Prince Charles. He is often seen wearing mended jackets or shoes, and even altered suits from decades ago to fit his current size. He can very well afford to buy anything he wants, but yet uses his clothes to the fullest and fixes them when something goes wrong instead of being all "princess-y" about it.

i was at DW the other day..

Some guy was telling his friend he walk stairs at an angle.. especially at overhead bridge.

He say hes careful that the tip dont bua on to the steps and the end dont slide dont feel inches.

I think all these hard to prevent one right?

i think he meant if he dont step to in to the steps.. his front wont touch the steps.. so behind will inch out to the steps he is stepping on..

actually also hard to describe to u.. i just assume that what he meant. lol.. my perception ~

Using kiwi is better than half of the population who don't maintain their shoes already. I think only like 20% of people shines their shoes.

How you guys protect your leather shoes in terms of heavy rain? Just knocked off from work at raffles place and kena swamp by heavy rain.

I changed into my spare pants and spare boots before leaving office. Should had bought that swims wrap thing from amazon. Damn.

Damn, that's what my mom made me do when I was in primary school when it rained. She was extremely fussy about me keep my uniform, especially my shoes very clean.

I lived in a kampong on a farm and we had no paved roads. Whenever it rained, it will be muddy and there was no way I would be able to keep my white-washed canvas shoes clean while walking to where the school bus would pick me up.

I remember my friends always made fun of me when I walked up the bus in the plastic bags wrapped around my shoes. Luckily my mom also packed another plastic bag for me to store the soiled ones in, haha.

I wonder how viable Swims or other types of galoshes are in Singapore. Most people prefer to dress conservatively and don't want to appear strange/abnormal, but galoshes have the tendency to look like Ronald McDonald footwear and do precisely the opposite (i.e. attract weird stares). Not to mention the fuss of taking them off and storing them if the downpour is over - how to carry around?

Then again, torrential rain is a fact of life where we live. Maybe the solution is to include several "wet weather" shoes in one's collection - e.g. pebble-grained uppers, bellow-tongues, storm-welted, commando or dainite soles. Keep one pair in office for rainy days, tree them to help with water dissipation, have another pair at home to rotate where necessary.

Heck, one could write a whole article about thoughts on the ideal basic shoe collection for work and play in Singapore.

I think well-made shoes can easily take a good accidental soaking.

As long as they're not submerged and worn sensibly during a downpour, stuffing the shoes with newspaper and air drying for a few days will take care or drying out the shoes. Then some conditioner and polish will return the shoes back to their pristine state.

I've had my shoes go through snow, tropical storms, gravel...etc, and they restore just fine with some TLC.

Caveat is that you must have a few pairs to rotate.

Basic is absolutely subjective my friend. To some, anything more than 1 pair for work is no longer basic! Haha

Of course for the fact that we are in this thread probably means we dont subscribe to that belief. It will really be interesting to see whose "basic" collection requires the most pair of shoes!
