Erm.. if a shoe that cost $700 and above i would rather use that money to buy 2 - 3 pairs of quality build shoes and recraft it when it's worn out. Since I'm not a golden foot so i can't imagine myself spending that amount of money to buy for a pair of shoes. Than again maybe that's your take on it but to me it's abit excessive for just 1 pair of shoe.

True. I thought like you at one point. Right now I cannot justify spending 1k plus for a pair.

True. I thought like you at one point. Right now I cannot justify spending 1k plus for a pair.

I started out buying bata shoes without ever imagining that I would spend more than 100 on a pair in future.

Our tastes all get more expensive eventually.

Well as a young guy starting out and heading to uni. I'm perfectly alright with spending for a good shoe at around $300. Maybe i would be like you in the future when i earn more but then again it depends since i'm quite happy with my newly brought allen edmonds shoe.

All my allen edmonds are below usd$150. Cannot imagine $200 shoes. No banker here... Recrafting maybe these days I just slap on shoe tap.

$1k shoes maybe one day if I ever become director or VP level.

I'd say spend within your comfort level. Cheap shoes and expensive shoes can last around the same time, although the more expensive ones are more durable especially on top. That being said, people do pay attention to good, branded shoes. So you'll need to find the best price point for your current spending power, to end up with a good overall appearance rather than just expensive shoes alone.

Find out the objective you are aiming for when purchasing to help you decide on that price point (aka budget).

Saw some comments on page 99 that Ed Et Al shoes were poor quality. Has this improved in 2014? Im surprised because i saw a lot of 2012 reviews and comments on places like styleforum saying the leather was good quality, etc.

Also why do they cost $300 on the website? Reviews i saw mentioned they went for under $200. Even if converted from SGD to USD, $300 SGD is about $240 USD.

They increased prices from sgd250 to 300 for their GY rtw range sometime back. Their styleforum page is inactive. Negative comments about their leather quality may be from me n i still standby those comments due to the excessive creasing experienced, even though they are comfortabe shoes.

Wearing AEs to uni is going to attract a hell lot of attention, not for looks but the noise you make when you walk. Depending on your school, you will probably see lots of flip flops too.

Thanks, i suspect it might have been great value at $250 but im pretty sure Loakes 1880s go for $300 or so on sale too...unless ed et al goes on sales too (which i doubt they do).

Can't fault a guy for bothering to dress up, even if it was overdressed. In my opinion at least he cared about his image to look good!

AEs arent necessarily suit only. Tan brogues go well with jeans for example.

I bought a pair of Eds back in ~2011. Maybe their last doesn't suit my feet but they haven't seen much wear since I got a pair of archules shoes which only set me back $100

I think Ed et Al quality went up since the 3rd collection (in line with price hike).

Last much better.
Leather better.
Sole also better.

(I have 4 pairs from 2nd collection and 1 from 3rd collection, so can tell the difference)
