From the finishing and first wear I am impressed with Ed more than DW. Let see a week later when I start to wear the new Ed I will report back my opinion.

how is Ed's made-to-order compare to their ready-to-wear off the shelves in terms of pricing and construction?

and in comparison with ATELIER LLYR?

was thinking if i cant snag a pair or two of shoes from the states might go over to Ed's to purchase something.

For RTW, I think a better option would be to order online. Ed's RTW range costs around $350, and are made in Vietnam(?). There is also a waiting period as the shoes are not kept in stock, but ordered from the factory once you have purchased the shoe.

Made in England Loakes can be bought for under $300 (excluding shipping), and are shipped with ready stock.

That being said, be a patriot and support Ed!

Within the last 1.5 years, Ed Et Al's shoes prices increased significantly. RTW now costs $350 (used to be $300), while MTO prices used to start at $500, but now it's $700.

Ed Et Al's RTW is comparable to LLYR. I had experiences with Ed Et Al's MTO and it's definitely better than RTW in terms of fit, breaking-period, durability and leather quality.

All in all, given the significant MTO price hike, I would rather go for Carminas, Alfred Sargent, Septième Largeur, or maybe even Enzo Bonafe and Vass.

You may head down to Robinsons and try out Loake's shoes to determine your sizing for different lasts. Preferably, the 1880 range series.

On another note, it's a risk to just try Loake's shoes then to determine other shoemaker's last & sizing. Shoemaker A's sizing may differs as compared to Shoemaker B due to the unique lasts and also styles(oxfords vs derby vs loafers and boots). An example, Shoemaker A's captoe oxford (size 8 UK) may be different as compared to Shoemaker B's captoe oxford (size 8 UK), athough both are of the same style and sizing. Differences maybe minor but it constitutes a certain risk (e.g. discomfort) though.

I would strongly recommend that one emails his/her feet measurements(or outline) to the retailers to get an accurate sizing and advices accordingly.

What kind of quality are you referring to? If you read this forum, I think there is a general consensus that the leather used for Ed's shoes is pretty poor for that price point...

I also find Ed's sizing to be off.
Try not to base on EU sizing, I do find different brands somehow has got different conversion for EU sizing

Ed's Sizing is definitely weird. I got a 44 which they label as 9.5 UK. My understanding is typically EUR 44 is UK10.

Yup, also can't really rely on the "international standard sizing chart". That doesn't necessarily work ideally across-the-board though. There are way too many conversion charts to refer online. Thus, the 0.5 issue and this can be quite an annoyance to discerning customers.

To be fair to Ed's, i have 2 incidents of quality service.
1) after wearing a new pair of wholecuts, i clipped the sole when boarding a plane resulting in chip on the sole and parts of it became exposed. The team helped me patched things up and cleaned up the sole. Now i cannot even remember which shoe was it.

2) A recent double monk purchase during the sale arrived with the shoe feeling a bit tight and 'orangey'. Daniel offered to help with the colour and stretch the shoes for me. I did not really asked for either.

They are a bunch of nice folks. Quality is ok for the price, and yes we need to support local artisans. Although most of my shoes are not from Ed's.

Product not great value for money, but great service. My service experience is as similar to what's been described above.

IMO, those off the racks' quality don't last (as seen from my colleagues and relatives)

They do have MTO programme at specific outlets, where you can opt for better quality, and construction like goodyear welt. Be prepared to pay for the price.

If you read today's ST, there is an article mentioning the shoemaker for LKY. His shoes are made once a year or once every 2 years. And they costs about $300, with adjustments at $30 a pop.

He also has his own lasts as well.
