Oh don't worry. You're definitely not alone. I'm just trying to refrain from commenting because it'll undoubtedly lead to me saying something like, "shoes are meant to be worn" or, "LMFAO learn2walk".

Rubber soles are usually available as a factory option. If you don't know how to wal- ahem, I mean, if you find leather soles slippery or expensive to maintain, go for dainite or another factory fitted option(tomir, wensum, etc).

LOL play SF antics hor. Don't forget to include the mandatory rotation pics of like 20 pairs of EG and G&G.

But aside on that, I find another useful purpose of a sole-guard is in covering and protecting the exposed threading on an unchanneled sole. Yea goodyear is done on a lock stitch but watching the threads get worn out, stray strands hanging out around, ground into the sole and filled with dirt (extra friction for wear?) sorta irks me personally.

Not an issue for channeled soles (until the channel is worn through) though by virtue of material characteristics, rubber/danite soles are unable to be channeled and the threads will always remained exposed or sometimes even aloft. So leather it is then!

Definitely agree with you my friend.
I've only ever topied one pair of shoes. Although all i really needed were toe taps, i don't think anybody does a very good job of it locally. Thus i went ahead with the rubber instead.
Have always felt that raw leather soles are the way to go. Balance .... honestly should never be an issue.

never quite understood all the hate against topy.

functionality and cost-effectiveness wise it is hard to argue against topy. aesthetics wise.... that would be another issue altogether.

one thing to note about topying shoes is that most factories do not like to accept topied shoes for original refurbishment for the same reasons why they do not accept shoes which have been re-soled by a 3rd party - they do not know whether the structure/ integrity of the shoe has been compromised and are not willing to accept the risk. only difference in the case of topy is that you could always just pull off the topy and most of the time it would be indistinguishable from a worn-out sole.

Jokes aside, personally i feel that topy is aesthetically unappealing. When we pay so much for a pair of shoes, wouldn't it be better to retain the way it looks. If you want functionality than just get a pair with dainite.

Btw is anyone here a fan of the Sanders playboy chukka? Just found out about it recently and really tempted to get a pair!

my first monk! from Meermin classic line... though can see some "flaws" on the shoe. but heck haha.

the color here looks slightly darker then in real life.

tried walking at home on ceramic tiles... seems very slippery as compared to my Loake L1.

guess i need to go for topy... dun want a nasty trip

btw, Meermin is charging USD75 for resole.

But all new leather sole will be slippery one luh, its only after a couple of wears where they get scuffed up that you'll slowly gain grip.

if Topying, wear a few months first hor!

That's normal for toe prone gaits. Purist will install a tap, heretics like me will just topy. Mad men will do both.

On a technical level, goodyear welt is sewn on a lockstitch, so when a portion of the stitching fails, the integrity of rest will remain unaffected until its their turn to be worn down enough to justify a resole.
