Recently I have another company scrapped laptop. It is working but the IT guys say I should upgrade some stuff.

I planned to use it for my business. Internet surfing, MS Office, watch some videos, maybe light games like Civilization/Football Manager of such. More for work.

It is a Lenovo Thinkpad T440s. Seems like all working fine.

Is it worth to do the SSD and RAM upgrade? Was qouted like 150-180 to add 8GB ram upgrade to 12GB from 4GB. and 200 to upgrade to a 500GB SSD.

Any comments? Thought I should ask here for more response. I need the laptop more for my own biz, not buying new one.

Worth the time n $$ to upgrade? Thanks

It is worth to upgrade those components. It is even more worth to do it yourself and not pay others to do it for u.

Its a old laptop so i'm assuming you'll be replacing the 2.5inch HDD bay. In that case get an SSD upgrade. The difference between the bloody slow clunky old HDD and a SSD is night and day.

Ram: DDR3 ram should not cost anywhere near that much. Try to find out the ram specs of your laptop and buy the ram yourself.

SSD: 200$ for 500GB Sata SSD is bloody ridiculous. https://www.amazon.com/Crucial-MX500-500GB-NAND-Internal/dp/B0784SLQM6 for 126 SGD including shipping.

From the exorbidant prices you quoted I'm assuming you went to one of those scam "SSD upgrading services". Dont bother. They charge a horrendous markup for what you can do yourself in 10minutes.

Buy the SSD, buy the ram, remove the back cover, install them yourself. It's very easy. Not sure, look up on youtube how to install. Its literally plug and play. For your usecase which is very light use, there's no need for more power. Get an SSD, and feel the speed.

Unless you are able to watch video on how to upgrade both RAM and SSD if not may have to pay for such service cost around $50 to include fresh install Windows 10 Pro.

Need to take note on the type of RAM in order to fit to the slot when you purchase yourself and SSD.

Installing and knowing the correct type of ram to buy is the trickier part(again, just search up the ram slot of the model of the laptop online and buy accordingly).

Installing a SATA SSD in the 2.5inch drive bay is so easy you could teach a kid to do it for you. M.2 slightly harder since you need to use screwdriver.

Again, both are damn simple to replace. Youtube got tons of videos on both, just watch and not have to pay ppl so much money to do smth so simple for u. If TS dont mind starting afresh and installing win10 on the new SSD, then just do a fresh install of win 10 on the SSD and throw out the old HDD. Again, youtube has loads of good tutorials for that. I dont see what's so hard that you'd need to pay someone over 50-100 bucks markup to do it for you.

Yeah.. that's why if TS is not too familiar and to pay abit for assistance as for business usage may have to be careful to avoid any issue.

The laptop in concern would be easy to handle in replacement but there is a need to watch out for certain things.

I did DIY on RAM & SSD removing and installing all the time.
Only if there is complication then i get my usual technician to handle and learn by watching.

I assume all that is on the HDD which is mounted in the 2.5inch drive bay? Given that your laptop has a m.2 slot as well(i'm too lazy to google, correct me if i'm wrong paiseh)

You can install a m.2 SATA SSD(no point going for NVME) in the m.2 slot.

Then, clone over the data from the HDD to the SSD. You could also upgrade win 8 pro to win 10 for free.

For certain laptops(mostly desktop replacement) the cpu and/or gpu is removable. Most laptops have these soldered on.

Lcd screen is replaceable yes, but this is a very delicate process and can damage your laptop.

The easiest and safest components to upgrade is the ram and storage. Those are almost always replaceable and are literally plug n play.
