They are good CPU's but the RAM support is only DDR3. Personally I'd go with what the other guy suggested and go for a Ryzen 2nd gen or higher. DDR4 RAM is starting to become very reasonably priced in that I don't think about sourcing second hand when I can get a 16GB kit below $100 new!

If you have one lying around then yes give it a go,.. don't know why but I assumed you were looking to pick up one specifically to do this - under that circumstance I would opt for a AMD Ryzen probably gen 2!

personally using one myself -->

e5 xeons used to be a good proposition before ryzen 3k was announced. its only good now if u are still using the lga2011 platform and get the really top of the line, or u want dirt cheap octa core systems. even my 2696v2 is only on par with a 2600/x in a real world workload like handbrake, and 2600 + mobo bundles are around the same price on taobao. i would personally go the ryzen route next time since there is actually an upgrade path.

If I can go back, I'd do a cheap e5 xeon pc n x79 board that supports ddr3.
I don't do intensive gaming, and such a setup would have suffice for most of my usages no to mention I'll save quite a fair bit

Only worth it if it is lga2011-3, 12 cores n above and you can get it below $200.

Because the actual performance of, let say a single 3rd gen Xeon, is roughly half of a single ryzen 4000.

Motherboard actually plenty, china side even make lga2011 Xeon motherboard that can support both ddr3 n ddr4.

If TS has already a Xeon E5 LGA2011 cpu and just want to explore using a Xeon to play games (AAA games included), then as what other has suggested. Go grab a cheap X79 or X99 board (if LGA 2011-3

However, a decent GPU is also required to game at smooth and good gaming experience. A GTX 1070 8GB will be a good combo if you have budget.

The e5 Xeon ppl discussing about belong to 3rd or 4th generation (2012-2014).

The Xeon based on 6th gen upwards mostly haben decommissioned, unlikely can get cheap. And also no point as amd solution is cheaper n better.
