I'm a programmer myself too and I am working in a tech consulting firm. Today, our career path (Programmer, Software Engineer, Coder etc) is quite stable with high demand in the IT industry.

Would you code an application for free in exchange for experience and portfolio building?

No, nothing is free.

e.g. I have changed some php reports on frontaccount(free web-based accounting) to compliant with SG GST.

If you're new and do not have much work experience you can work on open source projects for free to build your resume. But after you get work experience you will be able to command a pretty decent salary as a software engineer.
