when connect HDMI to my samsung 40" tv says mode not supported. the AV cables work.

Any idea why and how to fix this?

It's probably not detecting the correct resolution or may even be some other display issues such as a faulty hdmi cable.

Anyway, try doing a display reset as per http://support.xbox.com/en-SG/xbox-360/console/image-on-your-tv-is-unclear
