The Mi 8 SE comes with a 5.88" FHD+ AMOLED display of a 18.7:9 ratio by Samsung, which is a similar size to a traditional 5.2" display of a 16:9 ratio.

Both phones target different market segments.

Redmi Note 5 target those who are looking for affordable phone with good performance and big battery for long endurance.

Mi 8 SE targets those who are looking for a stylish and slim phone, with good performance too. If Xiaomi were to put in a 4000mAh(or bigger) battery in the 8 SE, that would mean an increase in thickness and weight.

The Mi 8 SE's main competitors are the OPPO R15 and vivo X21.
Of course Xiaomi has to design a phone similar to the twos', which the main objectives are stylish, slim, and trendy.

If one is on a lookout for a phone with big battery capacity, Xiaomi has the Redmi Note and Mi Max series.

It's all about market segmentation. Xiaomi can't possibly design a phone to suit all needs.
