For example, I'm listening to SoundCloud while playing Candy Crush. A Whatsapp text arrives and I switch to WhatsApp to view the text. The text contains a link which I click to go into the browser to view. Upon doing this, SoundCloud crashes and my music stops. To continue listening, I have to close one of the other 3 apps and restart SoundCloud.

The above is a very common example of normal everyday usage on any smartphone but MIUI is unable to optimise RAM fully to allow smartphone-like capabilities.

There have even been times when the whole launcher restarts due to MIUI's inability on the Redmi to handle more than 3 apps at a time.

I was using a Zenfone 5 1gb RAM, which is similarly priced, previously and it had no problem doing all of the above without fail. No rooting, no Cyanogenmod, plug and play right from the box.

My experience after using Xiaomi for close to a year.
If you are looking for something more than a phone. You can safely skip Xiaomi especially Miui.
This is especially thru now a day as even other major brand are selling at Xiaomi price range.

Also, I thought there was something about weekly updates for MIUI? I have yet to receive any. Will there ever be any?

Curve looks nice. I guess it's what the Redmi 2 is missing.. A glass.

Is there any other way to get a normal working smartphone out of the Redmi 2 without flashing a different ROM?

OTA downloaded but fail to install with a msg that the update is for Redmi2 variant that is different from mine :s11: Apparently my set is not running on Global rom even though it was bought from Xiaomi sg ..... :s11::s8:
Anyway, couldn't be bother with it anymore as this will be my last Xiaomi phone. Having owned Redmi Note and Redmi 2, I think I had enough with the hardware and software issues, and will be keeping my eyes open for other MIC phone on my trip to China in July.

Yes, definitely faster when switching apps.
There's other improvements too. for example: if i disable 2nd sim card, it doesn't display as no service at the top any more.;)

After sometime it will be back to norm as upgrade usually clean up some cache and memory. Finally Miui will not make it and you have to reboot once a while.
