was thinking of planning for a trip to make use of Silk Air's promotion to claim flights at half the required KF miles. if anybody is wondering what is this about, https://www.singaporeair.com/en_UK/ppsclub_krisflyer/silkairpromo-apr14/

identified this Yogyakarta & Solo City and after reading up, i realized that they are pretty near each other.

have the option of flying in to either cities as the kf miles and tax are the same.

anybody tried doing both this places before and can offer advice such as duration of stay? thanks!

I did that in 2011.

Day 1: Flew in yogyakarta and straight away train-ed to Solo. Had dinner at their night market and stayed one night in ibis Solo.

Day 2: Hired a full day driver. Visited Palace Manguregaran, Candi Cetho and Candi Sukuh. And drove to yogya hotel and stayed for the next 3 nights.

Day 3: Early morning at Borubodor. Afternoon nap. Sunset at Pranbanam. At night,Ramayana ballet with prambanam as backdrop.

Day 4: walked along malioboro

My experience in Solo was that most people could not speak english. Good to arm yourself with basic behasa

* i took budget airline and could only get into jogya. The train was one of those economy local kind of train, an hour journey. Would be great if you can land in solo and fly of yogya to save on travelling time

Been to Jogja before. Itinerary, pretty much similar to tshany. If you are adventurous, you can consider climbing up Mt Merapi. It will be an overnight adventure, starting at about 1AM to reach the peak/crater at about 530AM for the sunrise.

Another thing you can consider is going to the beach at the south. Didn't have time for that but I hear it's quite nice.

We stayed at Alamanda Bed and Breakfast which was affordable, and the boss is very friendly and accommodating.

wanted to do that but due to the use of miles, unable to land in solo and fly out yogya or vice versa. i guess the good thing is that both places isn't too far apart.

thanks for the advice.

The place I stayed at arranged transport for us. Didn't need a separate driver. Actually there is a Ibis Hotel next to Malioboro Rd which is quite popular. But it's your typical hotel. We wanted a B&B so we chose Alamanda.

I visited Solo and Yogyakarta in 2007. I flew to Solo with Silkair and returned via Yogyakarta. Prambanan is on the Solo to Yogyakarta route so we hired a taxi that would wait while we visited the site before going on to Yogyakarta. In Yogyakarta we stayed at the Ibis, and explored jalan malioboro from there. We then hired a taxi to take us to the Hotel Manohara at Borobudur which has a special admission deal that allows one to visit the Borobudur site at sunrise before the crowds arrive. Coming back to Yogyakarta, we next stayed in one of those laid back resorts at prawirotaman. We attempted mt merapi but failed to reach the summit. My advice is that one has to be fairly fit to attempt the physical climb.

Just realised I type in the wrong year, I went during 2011.

As I was based in Solo for the first night, I used a local car rental company named Tedda Rent Car for my solo itinerary and subsequently got the driver to send me to my BnB in Jogja. They did not understand English well, so we communicated using Google translate.

For my Borobudur/Prambanam/Ramayana Ballet, I joined those daily group tour which is essentially group pick-up service. I cant remember the website I used, but found something similar like this. I did the following in one day, quite tiring.

BEAUTIFUL MORNING AT BOROBUDUR - MENDUT TEMPLE
GRAND PRAMBANAN SUNSET - RAMAYANAN BALLET

Alternatively for the Solo portion, you can arrange transport with the hotel if you are staying overnight in that city. I saw Ibis and Novotel Solo providing such services when I was there. Let's say if you are staying in Jogya throughout, many tour agencies and car rentals available. Otherwise, use a taxi or arrange through the hotel.

I went late last year.

How many days do you have? To be honest, I didn't find Solo interesting. I was there for 3 days and apart from the palace, there really aren't really many attractions. Yogja was far better, so if you are pressed for time, just focus on Yogja. Of course if you have time to spare, then go ahead and spend 2 days in Solo. I stayed at the ibis hotel in Solo, and it was very comfortable and cheap (I think around SGD30-40). One of my highlights of Solo was dinner at the excellent Soga Restaurant (on the major street Jl. Slamet Riyadi). High end restaurant and food for a reasonable price (compared to Sg prices).

I took a train from Yogja to Solo and a mini van (Joglosemar bus company) for the return trip. You have to buy the train ticket on the spot (no online or advance booking). When I went to the train station, the next 2 trains were full, so I had to wait almost 3 hours for the next available train, which turned out to be a very hot, stuffy, and uncomfortable ride in dusty, run-down train. I guess it's OK just for the experience, but it wasn't a nice ride at all. To make things worse, the windows were so dirty I couldn't see the scenery at all.

The Joglosemar bus (actually a minivan) ride was way more comfortable as the minivan was clean and comfy, but it slows down considerably after it enters Yogja due to the bad traffic, and it took a total of 1.5 hours ( it took only 1 hour to reach the border of yogja, but took another 30 mins driving to the bus company's HQ in a ulu part of town). Then had to grab another cab to my hotel.

The bus also makes a stop at the airport (roughly at the 1 hour mark), so you could alight and grab a cab directly to your hotel. There are only a few buses a day, but you can call them to make a reservation.

Yogja is way more interesting. the town itself has the Palace, the Dutch Fort, Alun Alun Selatan, Malioboro Rd, the Water palace, etc. I spent an entire afternoon just wondering around the maze of alleys around the water palace. Residents have moved into the area over the last few centuries, so you'll see a mix of residents' houses and carvings or structures from the past. Very cool.

For Borobudur, I suggest you see it at sunrise. NOT the sunrise tour where you see Borobudur from a distance, but actually BE THERE ON TOP OF BOROBUDUR before 5am to see the sun rise. It's awesome. So peaceful and beautiful, and the mist on the surrounding countryside makes it even nicer. If you like taking photos, the photo opportunities are amazing. After 7:15am, the crowds pour in and Borobudur becomes a noisy crowded madhouse fully of chatting school kids and tourists.

You can either set off from Yogja at 4am, or just stay the night before at the Hotel Manohara which is right at the entrance of Borobudur. I did the former, but if I could do it again, I'll do the latter.

For Prambanan, I suggest you take a bus. The transjogja bus goes to Prambanan( I think about 40 mins ) from Malioboro street for less than 50 cents. The temple complex is a short 5 mins walk from the bus station, so don't listen to the becek drivers trying to con you that it's too far to walk.

Going on your own allows you the freedom to spend as much time there as you please, and you can also rent a bicycle to see the other smaller temples in the same complex. There are also other temples nearby that you can reach via becek (trishaw). The temples are especially nice during sunset as they are lit a golden orange by the setting sun. Your foreigner entrance pass allows you multiple visits on the same day, so you can check out Prambanan, exit to see other temples, and return again for the sunset.

Prambanan is very near the Ramayana ballet (highly recommended). Give the ballet company a call to reserve a good seat, and also ask them about arranging transport back to Jogja after the ballet ( the public bus service would already have ended). After the ballet, a shuttle bus sends you back to your hotel doorstep for a fee.

All in all, Jogja + Borobudur + Prambanan makes a good trip. You can do this comfortably (without Solo) in 3 full days without having to rush like crazy.

thanks for the long and informative review for your trip!

based on the silkair's day of service to solo city and yogyarkata, i probably have about 5-6 days.

my plan is probably to do 3 days in yogyarkata and 2 days in solo city regardless of where i fly in.

did you do a rough estimation of how much you spent there?

I didn't track my expenses, but really, it depends on what your eating/spending habits are.

Food is cheap. If you eat at the roadside warungs (hawker stalls), it's maybe S$2-3 for your meal, including a soft-drink. There are lots of these along Marlioboro Rd and at Alun Alun Selatan.

If you eat at a tourist-grade restaurant, then it's going to be $10 or more per meal. Again, you can find such restaurants at Marlioboro Rd and Jalan Prawirotaman, which is geared towards tourists with lots of hotels and restaurants.

Accommodations is $30 or more for a decently nice room. Guest houses and hostels will again be much cheaper. The biggest expense I had there watching the sunrise at Borobudur - getting a private car+driver to pick me up from the hotel at 4am cost around 300-400K IDR (obviously this will be more worthwhile if you can split the cost with fellow travellers. Look for notices by other tourists looking for co-travellers at hotel or restaurant notice-boards), while the entrance ticket was 380K IDR.

Everything else was pretty cheap.

BTW, the Palace (Kraton) in Jogja is only open in the morning, so plan accordingly.

If you have a strong interest in prehistory, the site of Sangiran (one of the most important sites for human fossils) is near Solo. There's a newly constructed air-conditioned museum. I went there but I was't really impressed. You can get there by bus+ojek or private taxi (taxi cost about 300K IDR).

If you're going anytime soon, please note that theres been increase in volcanic activity in Merapi. I was told some hikers suffered burns when Merapi suddenly spew hot ash in mid-April.

Seems there's a sudden increase in activity for quite a number of volcanos in Java recently. A 1km exclusion zone was imposed on Mt Bromo the day after I left.

Please be careful.

IMHO, you have to give it 5 days in Yogya to do it justice.

My previous Yogya itinerary:

Day 1: Kraton + Tamansari + Malioboro
Day 2: Cycling around surrounding country side + Kota Gede
Day 3: Prambanan and several other temples
Day 4: Borobudur
Day 5: Climbed Mount Merapi

The two good value hotels are Ibis and Pheonix Hotel. Phoenix Hotel is a bit like our Raffles Hotel but a fraction of the cost

At Borobudur, Manohara Hotel is within the temple complex (and thus most recommended)

If you intend to stay in hotel chain, you could apply Accor member for free. Once in a while (be patient thou) they would have 40% discount, and they have several hotels in solo/yogya (ibis, novotel, phoenix) in good locations.

One of my fave food in yogya is a fried chicken restaurant named Ayam Suharti, kind of like ayam penyet here.
Also If you do have chance to stay the night in solo and you game for some local street food, do drop by the 'galabo' where most type of local food vendor gather nightly in al fresco setup. If you have some sweet tooth, you could try the restaurant 'nini thowong' which also serve some typical local food (nasi gudeg, etc)

Agree. The Accor chain of hotels (ibis, mercure, novotel) are widely found in Indonesia. Whether in Jakarta, Yogyakarta or Surabaya, make a beeline for them when there are discounts.
