Hotels are cheap enough, you don't have to stay in a hostel. Consider the Ibis attached to Malioboro Mall- I stayed there. Street food can be found along Jln Malioboro outside of the mall. This road is like Orchard Road or Geylang Road. It is the main thoroughfare of the city and it stays lively round-the-clock. You will find yourself travelling on this road much of the time. At the north end of it is the railway crossing with the station not far off. At the south end of this road is the palace.
If you prefer a quieter place, you can look for one of those Bali-style resort hotels, where a small number of low-rise accommodations dot around a small pool. They can be found in the small lanes south of the palace.

If you value quietness and opportunity NOT being exposed to the place where 90% of (packaged) tourists are going with street and shopping noise combined, than stay away from Maliboro street.

I would rather recommend to stay south at Jl. Prawirotaman. It is nice atmosphere, good eating places, younger visitors. I personally stayed at Eclipse Hotel and found it cheap, comfortable and functional. You can eat at ViaVia cafe across which which in under the same roof as their tour agency. They have quite cool and interesting tours.

I have been to Jogja a few times. On my most recent trip last month, I was considering various places for stay. Ended up at 101 Tugu near the central for the convenience - mostly for food. :p

Hi guys, is 4D 3N good for Yogyakarta. Not going for water sports activities as will be bringing parents.

Will be taking AirAsia flight which will land at around noon time, depart Jogja at 7.30am, so theoretically around 3D3N.

Intending to go next month. Some of the places I've checked that I would like to go is the Borobudur temple and prambanan temple.

Saw some youtube videos on taking jeep to near Mt Merapi, looks nice.

Is 4D3N good enough? Driver and day trip can be booked via the villa and hotel right?

Thank you

I don't see how there is any difference. Timings for either direction are just as good. All up to you. I would board at the first available station ie Jakarta Gambir. In the other direction, some trains originate from Solo, so I'd avoid those.

Obviously here. I don't imagine there is great demand for SGD over there.

hi,

Will be going on a solo trip this month. total 5 days

Will not be doing much on 1st day except to explore around city. was wondering which is better - visit the 2 temples (borobodur+pramanan) next day and hike mt merapi following day or the reverse instead. I'm ok with visit the temples later morning but would want to visit merapi in early morning. And for mount merapi, is is better to get a guide or go in group? Heard there was eruption just on 4 Dec!!!

The eruption on 4 Dec (actually it is 3 Dec) is Mt Marapi on Sumatra Island, not Mt Merapi near Yogyakarta in Java island. However, Mt Merapi itself has been closed for a while due to volcanic activity. If you found some tours to Mt Merapi, it is probably referring to a visit to Kaliadem. Otherwise, not sure what hiking is possible at Mt Merapi now. Nearby Mt Merbabu and Mt Lawu are open for hiking. It is not a leisurely morning hike but usually a 2D1N endeavor if you intend to hike to the 3000m summit.

Thanks guys for bringing up that it is Marapi and not Merapi that erupted. Like many people, I assumed it was Merapi, which I attempted to summit in 2007. If an eruption took place, I don't think you can visit in the same month!

To get anywhere near the top of Merapi by noon, you will need to begin your hike around midnight. In any case, I think the trail is closed since the eruption in March.

You can visit Prambanan and Borobudur separately since they are not on the same side of Yogyakarta. Surakarta (Solo) is also interesting and Prambanan is on the road between Solo and Yogyakarta. Too bad though, there are no longer flights between Solo and Singapore.

Didn't knew this but good point. Probably will not do full hike even if safe to climb.

Wouldn't attempt the hike if eruption just occurred.

but for the climb, did you engage a guide or go in group? if the former, which company did you engage? May consider for next time instead. Will be visiting both temples in same day by starting in morning to borobodur then prambanan in afternoon

I think I booked through the front desk of my hotel. Prambanan is very near Yogyakarta, there are public buses that bring you there from Jln Malioboro, which is the main thoroughfare. https://diytravelhq.com/how-to-get-to-prambanan/
