You don't need the JR pass to commute between Yokohama and 'Tokyo'. The one way fares range from ¥3xx to ¥5xx from Yokohama to Shibuya and Shinjuku.

Have a look at staying within walking distance of the train stations in Kawasaki.

Tokyo is huge. It can be much more easier and convenient to get from Yokohama to some parts of Tokyo.

Will be spending 6days at Tokyo after Osaka..will be going for mount Fuji, Disney sea.the rest I suppose will be at yamanote line..since Yokohama is 18min away from Tokyo using shinkansen, why not stay there as hotels will be cheaper and bigger..not as crowded as Tokyo especially taking yamanote line..I not sure.. thats what my fren suggest..I get what he means

If you don't mind travelling extra 20 minute each way on a Rapid Train (Even longer if you're going to Shinjuku instead of Tokyo station) then sure

Yokohama isn't a cheap place btw, parts of Tokyo are cheaper.

That's one way I guess... if you keep Shinkansen between the two area

And here is the first type of trap for newcomers to Japan: The Shinkansen station is not at Yokohama, It's at Shin-Yokohama

Until you realize there are only a few paths of entry from Kanagawa prefecture to Tokyo prefecture (i.e. a few paths to cross the red line), and that Tokyo train itself is shaped like a spider web so while it is easy for everywhere to reach the city center, it is very hard to traverse between the train lines outside of city center.

BTW you can fit the whole of Singapore inside this screenshot.

So to cross the river, commuters have to go onto these train lines:

And they are known to be super packed during commute.

Shinkansen is expensive. Doesn't make sense to me if you're itinerary is mainly in Tokyo. I'll stay in Yokohama if I'm taking trips to Kamakura or other places from there.

Going around Tokyo, yamanote makes sense most of the time. Cheaper than metro. Like other major cities avoid peak hours.

so what are the few paths that you have counted?
I counted 6. in my definition of a few, 6 is definitely more than a few.

1. Ueno-Tokyo Line and Yokosuka Line; 25 to 29mins from Yokohama to Tokyo
2. Ueno-Tokyo Line; 32mins from Yokohama to Ueno
3. Keikyu Main Line; 52mins from Yokohama to Asakusa
4. Shonan-Shinjuku Line, Tōyoko Line, Keikyu Main Line, Ueno-Tokyo Line and Yamanote line; 28 to 33mins from Yokohama to Shibuya
5. Shonan-Shinjuku Line, Tōyoko Line, Keikyu Main Line, Ueno-Tokyo Line and Yamanote line; 40mins from Yokohama to Shinjuku
6. Tōyoko Line; 36mins from Yokohama to Harujuku
7. Keikyu Main Line; 44mins from Yokohama to Higashi-Ginza/Tsukiji Outer Market

why are you so fixated on the shinkansen? there are other lines that will bring one from Yokohama station to various parts of Tokyo.

@Ronaldo88 , if you are not convinced by what the other bros have mentioned, you might want to do your own calculations, in terms of hotel cost, travel time and transport cost, for if you were to stay in Yokohama + JR pass or in Tokyo.
Then you can do a comparison and see what is the net savings, if any, if you were to stay in Yokohama + JR pass.

While I cannot tell for sure how much you can save from staying in Yokohama, I don't quite agree that you will save significant time in travelling. You may save time from that Shinkansen ride from Yokohama to Tokyo, but eventually you will still be "bottlenecked" by the existing train system within Tokyo. Note that the time saved may not be "true" too since you are staying further away and are paying more.

While I say "bottlenecked", the train crowd isn't really that bad and there are many more lines other than Yamanote that can bring you around.

Even if you insist on staying in Yokohama, there is no need to get the JR pass too. There are other lines that will get you from Shin-Yokohama to Tokyo at much cheaper cost (~2900 yen vs ~550 yen) at ~10 to 15 minutes slower.
In short, is 15 minutes worth $24?

Not as bad as your friend says. It can be bad weekdays during morning peak hours and for certain lines that goes to their CBD. Are a tourist you can easily avoid.

Tokyo train lines are well developed, more than one way to go anywhere.
