Use it to buy time and happiness.
Do whatever, be with whoever, wherever and whenever they are happy.
Or
just the simple "2 chicks at a time".

Die with zero is a good read.
We have been busy collecting good memories and experiences instead of penny pinching since then.

Do not be like a miser who saves for those who will bury him - African proverb
Many will probably call u a heretic after reading chapter 1 of it. They will tell u sg medical cost high lah blah blah, need to leave inheritance to children lah etc.

I got friends with no kids earning $50-60k a month. Not sure how they spend this money.
Maybe they are planning a big bdae party at a high-end resort hotel at Bali and inviting everyone who matters at different phases of their lives to the party PLUS paying for all their flight and accomodation, except maybe you ain't on the invite list ?

Or maybe they are patrons of local charities (go google if you don't know what being a patron of a charity means).

Interesting to compare my spending pattern with others view on how to spend money

Cars: I only have one. Mileage in 2023 was less than 9000km, so I guess pointless to get a 2nd.

Wine and Dine: Don't really drink alcohol, but nice to meet friends for dinner. I detox 3 days a week by going vegetarian salad.

Holidays: A big planned expenditure, but so far not spending my budget - too many overseas business trips, a bit 'sian' to go on more overseas holidays because of that.

Investments: My biggest "expenditure". VWRD and VUSD 😅

Watches: I think GPS watch/trackers 'saved' me from beginning an expensive watch collecting hobby, as I like to track heart rate and other health stats... I haven't worn my Seiko or Casio watch for the longest time.... GPS tracker is on my wrist most of the time...

Bags: For women I guess
Thanks, that is a very interesting perspective. Beyond a point you cannot spend the money on "experiences" or even on materialistic pursuits.

I think when you reach this kind of level, maybe using the excess money for a home upgrade could be worth it.

a)It would be a part consumption and part investment. Nobody has ever complained about living in an even bigger and nicer home. It is something you can enjoy without the guilt trip, because it is part investment also, rather than spending on useless holidays.

b)You can pass it as inheritance for your children.

* As mentioned previously. I have visited friends who bought and renovated/rebuilt landed. Their homes are beautiful. A lot of effort involved, which my friends found meaningful as they could build a home that expresses their identity. I'm not really that interested. I did have to renovate my condo after I bought it and while it was interesting (I was reading a lot of design books/magazine/website), it was time-consuming. To do the same for an entire landed will take more time than I have.

* the price jump from good condo to good landed is pretty steep, landed will be at least 2x +++ price of my condo, assuming the same location. If you move from condo in good location to landed in lousy location, to me thats not really an upgrade. So upgrade to landed means a lot more of my total net worth locked into property, something I don't really want to do.

+ One plus point of landed is that my EV charging will be taken care of.
Some may feel that owning landed might be a reason to get a second car. When I drive past landed I can see various 2-door cars parked in the driveway. I guess the owners are "displaying" their 2nd car weekend fun car while they drive the 1st car to work.

Yes to each their own.
I personally prefer high rise with unblocked views.

Landed usually quite stuffy and hot and goto deal with pest and irritating mozzies.

Very true

A lot of the "modern" landed have no natural ventilation, just on aircon all the time. They usually have super high ceiling in living room so need giant aircon units.

Condo or flat, can just lock up and go for holiday 1 month no problem. House got all sorts of worry. Come back after 1 month get summoned for mosquito breeding 😅

My condo unit usually has strong breeze in the mornings which is very nice. Sometime breeze wrong direction can smell cigarette smoke though...

Elvintay seems like expert investor, Novavax, Palantir etc..
No expert la. I only got 4 chapalang stocks (max allocation 15-20% of portfolio). Novavax, Palantir, PACB and DXZY. The rest of the 80% are those dinosaurs like AAPL, Googl, Amazon etc. lately I sold all my Berkshire Hathaway. Quite emotion as I hold it since 2008.

Why sell Berkshire

I actually recently sold some shitty sgx counters I have been holding for more than 10 years. Now thinking of what to buy. BRK is one of the counters shortlisted

Actually they have been underperforming VOO. Quite difficult for me to continue investing. Buffett and Munger successors also quite dinosaur. That is why I feel a bit risky. Again that is me.

Aiyo! My wife say I cannot make it. Any dog that picked GameStop 3X! She said I should stop looking at the market and go watch drama with her. 😂!
