End of the month already, never update in this thread?

My overall networth is now over 1.9m with investment portfolio over 1.27m.

YTD total networth up 13.76% and investment growth excluding new inflow from salary savings is up 8.4%

All figures in SGD '000

I am now more into tracking rising equity percentage glide path of 1% increase per month. You can see the steady rise since I started this strategy in Mar 2021.

I think it depends on how the FAANGs perform. If FAANGs disappoint, then US will kind of stagnate.

I read about this value averaging thing vs DCA. Very Chim lei. Anyway to understand a bit better?

It is very easy to understand.

DCA is fixed amount investment every month, for example every month you invest $1000.

In VAP, you investment amount is more like a "top up" to match a particular portfolio level each month.

For example your goal is you portfolio should increase everymonth by $1000. If lets say if market doesnt move at all, then DCA = VAP = $1000 every month.

But markets go up and down, let say this month your portfolio value is 10k and next month you target it to be 11k, but market falls a bit so it actually ends at 9900, so you top up 1100 to hit the target level of 11k. But if markets rise a bit and actually ends at 10100, then you only top up 900 to hit the target level of 11k.

So in VAP, you need to have a cash pile that is seperate from your investment portfolio and your cash pile is used to top up the investment portfolio every month to hit the target level, if markets rising very fast, your cash pile will grow a lot, because you top up very less to your portfolio. If markets are falling fast, you spend a lot from your cash pile and the danger is you could run out of cash. So you need to set your portfolio target monthly increase to a reasonable level, not too high not too low.

If you are into driving , an analogy I can think of DCA is like filling your car petrol every week 10Ltr. While VPA is like every week you just do full tank. :)

It can forever run to new heights as the big companies continue to grow their business. The main driver for the US index is the cloud business, its something new over the last decade and it has really increase profits for Amazon, Google, Microsoft which make up a big part of the index. If you take out the cloud business then the growth will slow dramatically. Apple iPhone is also a big portion of the profits. We don't know when this growth will stop but its silly to bet against them. Just monitor closely and adjust your portfolio accordingly when there are signs of growth reversing.

It's great to see how you track your progress. I don't keep a history so I only got latest values.

Yeah, the cloud business is phenomenal and I can see it right in front of my eyes. In the bank I work in we use Azure devops, our email went to microsoft outlook 365 now our shared folders are going to OneDrive. It is just amazing, some 5 years ago, we thought banks would never let go of their data and would manage it themselves.

But then again, I question, what is the big innovation here? This is just outsourcing. Instead of managing it internally, they will just pay Microsoft to manage it and microsoft takes a cut and increases its revenues. But hey afterall they are just servers end of the day, physical hardware. There is competition and with that there are limits to how much profits they can make and it feels like a zero sum game to me. The cost is just being transfered from one company to another company. Not sure, if this is a big innovation in itself that it should warrant the S&P500 to keep climbing higher and higher.

I am sure no companies will outsource if the cost is higher. Company A spend 50m a year on maintaining their servers, now they outsource to a cloud provider for 50m a year. These cloud providers would try to reduce the costs to 40m and earn 10m from that amount through their economies of scale etc. So there are efficiency gain that make it possible to have profits. Growth is there but its not infinity because if most companies already migrated to the cloud then there isn't a lot of business to gain out there so it will stop some day. When the growth stop then the PE ratio will compress, it will not go on forever but the rise won't stop just because we think it has rise too much, the data need to make sense.

If I might simplify it further. When the market price goes up, invest a lower amount from the standard amount, When the market goes down , invest a higher amount from your standard amount.

How much lower and higher, you will have to look at the price and determine that. =)

At the end, the cost of investment tends to be lower and safer than DCA.

US continues to maintain the innovative edge by attracting the best of the world to go there and work for their companies . Now it's cloud, for next decade it would be something else. I don't see usa loosing the innovator crown very soon. So their companies will keep on grabbing the major market share in years to come.

I happened to see this video and it really put the points across why the market is not about to crash, you simply can't use last generation thinking to analyse today market.

Hi revhappy,

I was looking at your table and was wondering, why you track "YTD salary savings as % of networth". Mind telling me? thanx!

Also, I am guessing your fixed income includes cash & bonds?

I find this interesting and would like adapt into my current tracking. thanx!

I like to track it to get a perspective of how valuable is my salary savings, incrementally. If I keep a record of this for a long enough time, at some point as my networth increases my salary savings as a percentage of it will fall and then it will discourage me to work any more if my new savings is a small fraction and doesnt matter much. But as of now, the savings is quite good, almost equal to my investment growth, so I decide to work for 3 more years and use the new savings to add directly to equities and grow my equity ratio while not depleting my fixed income much.

Yes, my fixed income includes cash and bonds.

Thanks. That was what I was thinking in terms of looking how much salary contributes to your increment of networth and it helps you make decisions.

Thanks. Much appreciated.

I was just looking at Kyith from Investmentmoat's networth.
https://investmentmoats.com/StockPortfolioTracker/stockportfolioinvestmenttracker.php
It takes sometime to understand it.
But it is very interesting.
His total investment portfolio is around 1.325m SGD, he holds around 50% cash.
He has only 40k allocated to SG stocks maybe legacy portfolio which he wants to get rid of.
His holdings are mostly US ETFs, not quite broad market but lots of sector ETFs and factor ETFs.

But just going through his google sheets portfolio, to me he seems like he was once an individual stock investor, mostly SG stock investor and then has now matured to become mostly US ETF investor.
