Am on the train now. Quite disappointed I didn't manage to get into car 1 where most of the exhibits and other stuff are located. Must reserve tickets in advance in order to do so

They didn't sell it on the train leh. Think it's sold at the station ?

Only cars 1-3 have the special eva treatment. The rest are pretty plain.

I now realise kodoma non reserve seat cars have four abreast seating. Those are super comfy

Major bummer.

U need to reserve the ticket on Jr west website to be eligible to enter the simulator and front cabin.

No chance of that happening when you're using a rail pass

Only three cars of a 6 car train have the nerv stickers applied.

Hype train really.

Now can enter 1st carriage without reservation. Only the simulator need reservation.

Sent from . using GAGT

Same same but what's the difference ?

I might be taking that kodoma 741 again to Hiroshima on Thursday. Will update u if there's any difference.

I realized smoking cars on kodoma carraiges use the old green class seats. Super plush and comfy if you can put up with the smoke smell

Only first 3 cabins are decorated. If you are boarding at Shin Osaka, just queue at cabin 2 for unreserved seat. I got a reserve seat at cabin 5 and it was pretty regular cabin.

I stop at a few stations along the way and they have related decorations. If you go to Hakata station, there is a themed shop selling related souvenirs at the Shinkansen exit (take the Hikari or Sakura, Kodama is too slow for Hakata). There is also a restaurant selling Eva theme food items in the Shinkansen waiting area.

The shop on the platform in Shin Osaka sells a Eva themed bento for 1500 yen.

Uh, not trying to be rude to the above poster but just trying to highlight and add on some points while inferring from his previous post. For those who are unware, this special 500 TYPE Eva Shinkansen run is only currently operating on Kodama 730 and 741 train services under Sanyo Shinkansen by JR West strictly spking, there are definitely no Hikari or Sakura trains avail for this particular Sanyo Shinkansen route so if you are heading for Hakata as your main destination via Shin-Osaka as yr embarking start point, while you can indeed stop by Himeji or Okayama Station and later switch to a faster express Shinkansen service, it means you have to do some pre-planning of timetables via Hyperdia app, and also running into the possibility of having no non-reserved seats for yourself for the rest of your ride, should you choose to decide to hop onto the next available Hikari express trains from yr earlier alighted stop.

For those who wish to purchase Evangelion-related travel amenities/merchandises, you can buy it from their original website (original site mentions that the Eva-themed original towel and original N-gage train kit merchandise will be avail for retail eventually, it is currently only shown for display at their display purpose/simulator room inside the 1st carriage cabin).

Also, to further add on some extra tidbits information regarding those Eva-themed ekiben, there have already been some reports by Impress Watch site awhile back, that you can buy original Eva-theme ekibens at Shin-Kobe and Nishi-Akashi Stations, so Shin-Osaka isn't the only stations for hunting down those Eva-theme bento boxes. (honestly spking, I'm not that much of an Evangelion fan myself, more of a GITS fan personally but still anime-themed ekibens are always cool no doubt! )

Lastly but not least, as mentioned by forumer coldkey previously for avid fans you may wish to make a trip down to Hakata Station personally yourself, because there is a dedicated 500 TYPE EVA cafe and also their own EVA shop as well, which probably stocks and retail their Evangelion-based merchandise goods that you see as documented on the Impress Watch site that I had linked earlier. This Cafe & Shop were already in operation since November 7th last yr, and will continue in operation until March 2017 at least. (tentatively atm as announced on JR West's press article webpage as shown above)

営業期間 (Operating schedule period)
平成27年11月7日(土曜日)から平成29年3月(予定)

営業時間 (Operating hours)
7時から21時 (0700hrs to 2100hrs daily)

Hope the above info helps.

I didn't originally plan to go to Hakata, only took 741 from Shin Osaka to Hiroshima. This is the reason for my other thread on visiting Miyajima in the late afternoon.

Was suppose to head for Himeji but I chance upon news of Sakura bloom in Fukuoka so I took Hikari down there.

Okayama was an accidental stop, I took the Sakura intending to get off at Himeji in the afternoon but found that the particular one I took skipped Himeji so I had to drop at Okayama to catch the next train that stops at Himeji.

According to what I understand from reading JR West press coverage webpage and this blog article, in order to gain access to the 1st carriage car area display purpose/exhibition room and the 500 TYPE EVA Full-size Cockpit Simulator Experience (aka 実物大コックピット搭乗体験) it requires advance reservation/lottery winning confirmation and one will have to register on JR-West website membership for it. (more details in English can be viewed here)

Someone had already uploaded a video of the '500 TYPE EVA Full-size Cockpit Simulator Experience' on YT already, it gives a pretty gd idea of what to expect.
