just got mine set up

USG-PRO-4
US-16-150W
UAP-AC-PRO
UC-CK
Mounted on a 6U Startech wall mount, bought a 1U PDU (UK PLUG), hid it inside a small closet which used to house my AC68U router.

For those using viewqwest, when you switch to the new USG, please call their technical hotline 3102 0000 and inform them you are switching to a new networking device. They will check from their end and "clear" the old MAC ID from their system.

Upgraded both switch and AP but the USG i just leave it as it is because I want to monitor if there are any random reboots. My USG was tested in April 2018. Not sure if the problem was fixed by then. I also changed to 2 Noctua fans. Tried the original fans and it was ridiculously loud. The Noctua fans are very silent but my hardware are running hot. Monitoring for a few days first before buying a small USB fan to cool it.

Also saving up to buy a rackmount NAS (still thinking about it though) but for now the internet is temporarily settled till the inch starts again. :D

Nice! Very similar to my setup!

I hate the 1st gen cloud key. Its too slow for captive portal uses and it somehow keeps going offline. Both ubiquiti forums and reddit seem to share my experience. I moved the controller to a docker container on my unraid NAS and never looked back

Hi All,

Apologies to hijack the thread and would like to seek some advise.

Currently I'm using ASUS AC88U connected to viewquest router in the living room. I have a lan running through to the master bed room where I have the AC66U as an access point for wifi.

I will be moving from my current location to a new flat where I am looking at using Ubiquiti for my new network setup. My intention is run lan points to all 4 bedrooms + wifi access point in the ceiling of the living room walkway which should be able to give wifi coverage for the house? I have a Synology NAS and 2 printers as well at my home.

Any idea which Ubiquiti equipments I need and is it easy to setup these?

Thanks in advance!

If you want to have a full unifi stack then you will want a USG (router) + unifi switch 8 or 16 port + unifi AP(s). As you have a synology nas, you can run the unifi controller as a docker container on it.

USG Router = $180
8 Port POE Switch = $185
AC Pro AP = $200

Maybe you like a in-wall unit for the master bedroom to cover 5ghz = $170.

Hello there and everyone else... any pics of how you mount the in-wall units especially in HDB flats? Surface mount?

Not enough details about your house layout for us to make an educated guess.
This is not my floor plan but it's the closest i could find

Let's say my router on the blue dot. My work table is at the red dot.

Currently the wifi is bad at my work table. I'm thinking of getting one AP and place it somewhere near my router (blue dot). I know wifi cannot penetrate cement walls, so i wonder if it could penetrate my bed room doors as it's made of wood.

I could at most shift the AP closer to the wall nearer to the kitchen facing the walkway directly opposite the store room

From my personal experience, 5G WiFi can penetrate 1+ walls while 2.4G can go through 2+ cement walls before being unusable.

Wooden doors does not seem to affect WiFi much

Ahh.... Good to hear, but can wifi do a 90 degree turn into the red dot?

Sorry if the question seems stupid. Noob at networking here

Wifi is direct line-of-sight signal.

So draw a straight line and see how many obstacles and the distance.

Placement should be as high as possible as it transmit horizontally & downwards.

I would say put the AP right in front of the store..

Just FYI, Cloud Key Gen 2 is now available on the early access store if anyone is interested. Battery backed-up to minimise corrupt database due to sudden power failure and it will cleanly shut itself down if there is a power outage detected and its POE too!

Meh at that price you can buy a new laptop to run the controller on...

Still it's better than the 1st gen cloud key where it's too easy to get a corrupted database due to power fluctuations.
