Loch Ness Monster ‘might be real’ say scientists after DNA testing of water samples

https://sg.news.yahoo.com/loch-ness...r-dna-testing-of-water-samples-090745511.html

The Loch Ness Monster “might be real”, a team of scientists has claimed.

Researchers made the claim after examining water samples from Loch Ness in Scotland.

They travelled the length of the loch on research vessel Deepscan taking water samples from three different depths.

The scientists collected DNA left by creatures in the loch from their skin, scales, feathers, fur and faeces.

The DNA samples were then sent to labs in New Zealand, Australia, Denmark and France to be analysed for the final findings.

Professor Neil Gemmell of the University of Otago, New Zealand, who led the study, said the results are “surprising”.

He says his team tested the data against most of the main theories about the Loch Ness Monster.

Professor Gemmell said that while the full details will be released at a later stage, one of the theories “might” be correct.

One theory is that the monster is a long-necked plesiosaur that somehow survived the period when dinosaurs became extinct, or it is a sturgeon or giant catfish.

Professor Gemmell said he hoped to announce the full findings of the study in Scotland next month - but would not confirm which hypothesis might be right.

He said: "Is there anything deeply mysterious? It depends what you believe. Is there anything startling? There are a few things that are a bit surprising.

"What we'll have achieved is what we set out to do, which is document the biodiversity of Loch Ness in June 2018 in some level of detail.

"We've tested each one of the main monster hypotheses and three of them we can probably say aren't right and one of them might be."

Hundreds of thousands of visitors flock to Loch Ness every year to try and catch a glimpse of the mythical monster.

Nessie is worth millions of pounds to the Scottish economy - and tourist bosses previously said they are "eagerly anticipating" the results.

Announcing the study last year, Professor Gemmell said: "Scotland is dear to my heart because my mother and her family are Scottish, I’m delighted to be here to undertake our environmental DNA investigation of Loch Ness.

"It’s a place of extraordinary natural beauty.

"We’re delighted with the amount of interest the project has generated in the science and, monster or not, we are going to understand Loch Ness, and the life in it, in a new way."

Fox news: Mysterious large mass discovered on Moon bewilders scientists: 'Whatever it is, wherever it came from'

https://www.foxnews.com/science/mysterious-mass-discovered-moon

moon-mass.jpg

A large mass of unknown material has been discovered on the largest crater on the Moon and scientists aren't sure what it is.

According to an April 2019 study published in the journal Geophysical Research Letters, the researchers believe the mass could contain metal from an asteroid that crashed into the celestial satellite, which resulted in the aforementioned crater, known as the Lunar South Pole-Aitken basin.

"Imagine taking a pile of metal five times larger than the Big Island of Hawaii and burying it underground. That's roughly how much unexpected mass we detected," lead author Dr. Peter James, assistant professor of planetary geophysics at Baylor University, said in a statement.

In addition to being the largest crater on the Moon, the Pole-Aitken basin is also one of the largest known impact craters in the solar system and is thought to be approximately 4 billion years old.

James and his team looked at data from NASA's Gravity Recovery and Interior Laboratory (GRAIL) mission and the changes in gravity they discovered surprised them.

"When we combined that with lunar topography data from the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, we discovered the unexpectedly large amount of mass hundreds of miles underneath the South Pole-Aitken basin," James said. "One of the explanations of this extra mass is that the metal from the asteroid that formed this crater is still embedded in the Moon's mantle."

The anomaly – "whatever it is, wherever it came from," James added – is weighing down the basin floor by more than half a mile. The team of researchers ran computer simulations that show the iron-nickel core of an asteroid could have been placed into the upper mantle of the Moon following impact.

Loch Ness Monster filmed by couple who say 'she's definitely black and a fair size'

https://www.mirror.co.uk/news/weird-news/loch-ness-monster-filmed-couple-16511987

The Loch Ness Monster was caught on camera and is "definitely black and a fair size," a couple who were on holiday in the Scottish Highlands claim.

Gloria and Ian Davidson spotted a dark creature with a head and neck as they drove alongside the lake on Tuesday.

They stopped their car by Urquhard Bay and watched the creature for a minute before it submerged into the water again.

Their sighting has been accepted and recorded as the seventh sighting of Nessie by the Official Loch Ness Monster Sightings Register.

Gloria, 57, from Corbridge in Northumberland, told the Daily Record : "We have been to Loch Ness many times, but never seen the monster before.

"But I always like to look at the loch - I can't imagine how many pairs of eyes are on that loch at any one time. But I have spent periods looking at the water, because you never know."

She was quite certain of what they saw as they stood about 300 metres away.

She said: "But at around 1.30pm just after we had lunch, my husband was driving and I was in the passenger seat gazing out at the loch.

"Then I suddenly saw something and I said to Ian 'there's something down there.'

"He turned around and we got out of the car and there it was. We were very excited. It was about 300 metres away and definitely black.

"It seemed to have a neck and head. I could definitely see its back and it was a fair size.

"It disappeared after a minute beneath the water.

"I had hoped there was something (Nessie) in the loch - you always want to believe in something. All I can say is that we saw something we cannot explain. But it was animate and it was definitely not a seal."

Gary Campbell, recorder of the Official Loch Ness Monster Sightings register said: "This is our seventh sighting of the year and these are all very credible sightings.

"It is clearly Loch Ness and clearly unexplained. In terms of Nessie videos it's also very clear and we still don't know what it is. It all adds to the mystery.

"But do these latest sightings explain the Loch Ness mystery - No? Do they add to the weight of evidence that there is something happening that is unexplained - yes."

It's said the first sighting in 2019 of Nessie on January 24 was the earliest for 18 years.

And the most recent sighting was recorded by a man called Mr Pycock on May 27.

Professor Neil Gemmell of the University of Otago, New Zealand, and his team have been taking water samples from the loch from three different depths on their research vessel Deepscan.

The scientists collected DNA left by all creatures from their skin, scales, feathers, fur and faeces.

The DNA samples were then sent to labs in New Zealand, Australia, Denmark, and France to be analysed.

Prof Gemmell - an expert in genomics, ecology, population, conservation and evolutionary biology - said the data was tested against most of the main theories about the Loch Ness monster.

While full details of the study are yet to be released, Prof Gemmell said one of the theories 'might' be correct.

"Is there anything deeply mysterious? It depends what you believe," he said.

"We've tested each one of the main monster hypotheses and three of them we can probably say aren't right and one of them might be."

Prof Gemmell said he hoped to announce the findings of the study in full next month - but would not confirm which hypothesis might be right.

Nasa has spotted strange chevrons on Mars – and they look more than a little like an appropriate logo.

The curious shapes look remarkably like the famous logo from Star Trek and is carved into the surface of our nearby neighbour.

But the space agency is keen to stress that the icon has not been carved into the red planet by the Starfleet. "Enterprising viewers will make the discovery that these features look conspicuously like a famous logo: and you’d be right, but it’s only a coincidence," it wrote.

Instead, it's a natural phenomenon that shows how Mars has developed over its history. The shapes – spotted on the Hellas Planitia plane on the south of Mars – were formed by a confluence of dunes, lava and wind that tell the story of the red planet's surface.

On ancient Mars, there were huge crescent-shaped dunes that moved over the area. At some point, an eruption meant that lava flowed around the dunes but did not reach their top.

This one is outside our world... but I guess it deserves to be here

The team of Beatriz Villarroel of the University of Stockholm and the Institute of Astrophysics of the Canary Islands (IAC) has now published the current status of their research in the journal Astronomical Journal. Villarroel also led the analysis of the first disappeared star in 2016. Now, the researchers have compared around 600 million celestial objects in the US Naval Observatory Catalog with a current catalog of the Pan-STARRS (Panoramic Survey Telescope and Rapid Response System) project. They have found, according to the information, 150,000 objects for which there is no equivalent in the newer Sky Atlas. They have manually reviewed 24,000 candidates and 100 "particularly interesting sources" have caught their attention.

Overall, the apparently disappeared in the meantime objects are redder and would move faster than typical objects in the ancient celestial catalog. If the stars actually disappeared, this could be an example of a new astrophysical phenomenon, the researchers explain the significance of their study. Normally, dying stars go through different states very slowly until they become a white dwarf star. Or they suddenly explode in a bright supernova. It is possible, for example, that so-called "failed supernovae" are behind the disappearance. According to theories, a star could collapse directly into a black hole.

Reference to extraterrestrial civilizations?

In their study against the scientists also on the possibility that extraterrestrial civilizations are behind the vanished stars, because "observations such as these pose a challenge for astrophysics". Therefore, one could think about whether it is about references to so-called Dyson spheres. Such structures, described only theoretically, completely envelop a star to absorb all energy released. Should such a one be found, that would be evidence of sophisticated, intelligent extraterrestrial life. Even targeted lasers could explain why the original points of light can no longer be found. At present, however, there are no clear references to extraterrestrial life in any of the sources examined, Lopez Corredoira states.

The VASCO project now has the potential to find rare and extremely variable objects. This could provide clues to extremely fast phases in the development of a star, which are extremely difficult to observe, complements with Sebastien Comeron from the University of Oulu another involved researchers. The team is currently considering how to make all 150,000 identified anomalies available to the public so that interested volunteers can help in the search for more copies. They want to do that as quickly as possible. This could be used, for example, to determine whether disappearing stars pile up in certain regions of the sky. In addition, they announce further analyzes of the already identified 100 vacancies.
