ONT -- SingTel AC Plus

ONT -- New TP-Link wireless router

You need to set up Singtel VLAN profile on the new TP-Link wireless router.

Can Singtel AC Plus have AP mode disabled, and set to router mode, and then connected to a Singtel ONT, or Singtel ONR with port converted to bridge mode?

SingTel AC Plus will function in router mode with SingTel ONT as it has built-in SingTel VLAN. It will also automatically function in AP mode when connected to SingTel ONR.

If you bridged the ONR, the bridged port is without VLAN, then SingTel AC Plus can not work as it has built-in VLAN.

SingTel AC Plus will also not work as a router with other ISPs using ONT because the built-in VLAN. But it can be used as an AP when connected to other router.

so the vlan tagging of AC plus cannot be disabled? Like some other routers, you can set your own vlan tag or leave it blank to disable vlan. AC plus cannot? Option not available?

I’ve been using Singtel Ac plus for 2+ years and recently I figured out that I cannot save any changes on 5G band channel. The reason that I was doing this is my tp link extender can only detect certain channel bands like 36/44/48 on 5G, but every time I made the change the channel changes again on its own after short period of time. Is it a device failure? Can anyone help me out pls? Tks

If you are out of contract already, you can recontract and get the SingTel Mesh Router (not really a mesh solution) which has better wifi performance and better stability. No point keep using the AC Plus.

Even if you are still in contract, you can try to contact SingTel to replace it, or just buy the SingTel Mesh Router from Carousell at about S$30.

I just called Singtel on 1GB plan switch from other ISP. They are giving "Singtel in-house Router", is this Singtel AC Plus? So, is useless, right?

I wanted to buy the ASUS RT-AX86U, but they don't trade-in.. the "Singtel in-house Router" becomes white elephant :(

Currently, I have Velop (3 nodes), can it be used with ASUS RT-AX86U?

Can anyone advice.TQ.

No, SingTel is now giving SingTel Mesh Router and not AC Plus. It is quite a bit better than AC Plus but still no fight with RT-AX86U.

But you can get RT-AX86U by using the following link. They are allowing trade-in of existing Asus routers.
https://www.singtel.com/personal/products-services/broadband/eform/asus-wifi6

As for Linksys Velop, yes you can still using it. You may choose to bridge the Velop.
https://www.linksys.com/us/support-article?articleNum=243548

But still it is worth to mention that SingTel is using ONR and you may need to request to bridge the ONR to fully utilize the features of RT-AX86U.

The monthly pricing of S$49.9 is much more expensive than other ISPs, so I actually do not think it is a good idea to sign up, even with the 3 month free and the effective price is S$.43.66

You may just wait for Asus to bring the RT-AX86U to the general public and keep using your current ISP.

SingTel Mesh Router thread. Take note it is not a mesh solution for now as SingTel does not sell the mesh extender with the Singtel Mesh Router.

It is much better than SingTel AC Plus and I am actually using it as the main router (and SingTel TV box, Xbox One S) but I have Asus RT-AX82U behind it (Double NAT) to provide faster wireless to the wireless devices.

Thanks for advice xiaofan,

I'm still blur like sotong. If I switch from other ISP to Singtel, I can get $39.90/mth. Is it worth it if I trade in my current ASUS RT-AC88U for RT-AX86U?

" I have Asus RT-AX82U behind it (Double NAT) to provide faster wireless to the wireless devices." May I know what is this double NAT about?

Appreciate your guidance, thanks.

Yes it is worth to trade in the old RT-AC88U for RT-AX86U. And S$39.9 for SingTel is considered as good.

The only problem is that SingTel will give you ONR which will be the main router.

If you configure RT-AX86U as an AP to avoid Double NAT, many features will be lost.

If you configure RT-AX86U as a router, this will result in Double NAT. Majority of the features of RT-AX86U will be preserved and there will be no problems for internet browsing but may cause problems for other activities.

Double NAT.
https://kb.netgear.com/30186/What-is-Double-NAT

So you need to check whether it will cause problems for you or not.

Recommendation is to request SingTel to bridge the ONR so that you can use the RT-AX86U as the main router and you can use its full features.

All in all, avoid SingTel if you feel this is complicated because of the ONR thingy. I actually recommend inexperienced users to avoid SingTel because ONR thingy..

In my particular case, I choose to go with Double NAT for some reasons. And I connect my Xbox (which may have problems with Double NAT) and SingTel TV box to the main Singtel router. And since I am using ONT, I can easily remove the SingTel router and use my RT-AX82U as the main router to avoid Double NAT at any time.

The SingTel RT-AX86U page has the Asus guide for Singtel users. For ONR users, the recommended way is to set as an AP. But they never mention that many features will be lost in AP mode.

https://www.singtel.com/content/dam...QIG/ASUS-Singtel-Setup-with-Profile-Guide.pdf
****
For ONR users, select Access Point (AP) mode and proceed to step 14.

For ONT users, select Wireless Router Mode (Default) and proceed to step 4.

Hi Xiaofan,

I'm really tech idiot, the more I read, the more I get confuse, IPv6, throttling, CGNAT, static IPs, etc...

Sincerely seeking your advice..

Currently I'm with MR (no contract), consider to switch from MR as my wife's laptop consistently have Internet access when TV is switch on. WIFI signal in my last two rooms not good enough (~-65dBm) even with Velop. So she blame MR no good. So,like to switch ISP, mainly sign a contract with better rate as non-contract rate is high.

Current connection configuration and usage:- I'm using RT-AC88U, with Velop mesh router. most of the time, 12-15 devices connected to network. mainly on web surfing, TV, video streaming, BT, VPN.

I'm in dilemma in decision on which ISP go to.. :-

a) Should I stay with MR? have CGNAT, no throttling. No router on RT-AX
b) Consider Singtel, ASUS router trade-in RT-AX86U ($14/mth), 1GB fiber $39.9/mth. But, ST use ONR, don't have IPv6, throttling is worst among 3 big telco.
c) Understand M1 is highly apprised by many users. Consider signing up with M1, ASUS router trade-in RT-AX88U ($13mth), 1GB fiber $39.9/mth, ONT, M1 has IPv6, throttling is not serious among 3 big telco.

if I get RT-AX88U or AX86U,bBased on my current HW config and usage, which ISP is best for me to resolve my current problems?

Much appreciate your kind enlightenment. TQVM.

I think you need to diagnose the issue first. Switching ISP may not help. As for the router, RT-AC88U can indeed be a problem especially if it is aging. It is one of the more problematic routers from Asus, along with RT-AC87U.

Please post the floor plan and point out where the ONT, AC88U and Velop are placed. And which Velop models are you using? Are you using Ethernet backhaul or wireless backhaul?

And why the TV will affect internet access?

Hello all,

I am currently on a Singtel 1gbps plan with the AC Plus router + ONT + 2 Askey meshes.
- No Mio-TV

For the past months there have been several loss of internet / router auto-restarts, so I am wondering if it is time to change the router.

Since I happen to be eligible for re-contract, I took a look at the Singtel website and they are offering 2 new routers and many new meshes.

1. What is the difference between a normal router and a mesh router?
2. Which of the 2 is the better one for daily use / gaming? Is it plug and play?
I am not network tech inclined so all the VLAN tagging etc. is confusing me.
3. Are the Askey meshes compatible with the new routers?

Appreciate your input.

Singtel is giving away Singtel Mesh Router which is better than AC Plus. It is plug and play. And Askey Mesh is compatible with Singtel Mesh Router.

However, the base plan of S$49.9 per month with 2 month free (effecitve price is S$45.74) is not attractive. I am not so sure how much you pay now but you can see they are pricing it close to the 1Gbps with Askey Mesh (S$50.9 per month) to try to convince the user to subscribe to the Askey Mesh plan. Try to negotiate with Singtel to get the monthly subscription down to S$39.9 per month with the free Singtel Mesh Router.

Singtel 1Gbps plan:
https://www.singtel.com/personal/products-services/broadband/fibre-broadband-plans

Singtel Mesh Router: basically plug and play, just replace Singtel AC Plus with it and you will have a bit better of performance.
https://www.singtel.com/personal/support/broadband/routers-ont/singtel-mesh-guide

If you want to upgrade, then the Wifi 6 Asus RT-AX86U is good. It is not really plug and play, but it is still pertty simple to set up by follwing the guide. It is a very good match with the ONT users (not that good for ONR users). But again the base price of S$49.9 with 3 month free may not be so good (effectively S$43.66 per month).
https://www.singtel.com/personal/products-services/broadband/eform/asus-wifi6

In any case, no matter which router you are getting, your Askey will still work.

Hi Xiao Fan,

Thank you for your response!

I believe the current subscription is less than $50 per month right now, so it would make sense to just get the Asus Router?
I assume the AC Plus router is not WiFi 6, so it should be a definite upgrade using the Asus router.
However, the users at home are closer to the meshes than the router, and both meshes are currently connected to the AC Plus via ethernet (laid ethernet points during renovation), will the WiFi 6 actually be of use in this scenario?
What kind of upgrade can we see in this scenario?

AC Plus has two major problem.
1) weak routing performance, need to reset from time to time in order to have no disconnect
2) weak wireless coverage

Your Askey sorts out Issue #2 but not Issue #1.

Singtel AC Plus: AC1200, relatively slow CPU
Singtel Mesh Router: AC1900, faster CPU
Asus RT-AX86U: AX5700, much faster CPU

If you do not have Wifi 6 device, then just go with the base plan and try to get the Singtel Mesh Router for free. If they do not give you the Singtel Mesh Router for free, it is still easy to buy the Singtel Mesh Router from Carousell for about S$30.

And in any case, try to negotate with Singtel on the pricing front. S$39.9 per month should be achievable.
