Tibetan Buddhism and Buddhism as practiced in China and Japan, Korea, Taiwan (mainly) is known as 北传佛教aka mahayana Buddhism while those as practised in Thailand, Laos, Sri Lanka, Cambodia etc is known as 南传佛教aka theravada Buddhism.

Basically they all believed in merits obtained from chanting, 布施etc as that is part of their basic practice.
