I wanted to ask u guys if you all experienced slow speed for your m1?

I'm on 1 gbps in punggol and I get a large speed drop usually during working hours. It does affect wfh setup from time to time

IMG20230315164656.jpg

I got 520 mbps via wired connection directly to ONT (to test the network)
I ever seen it drop to 300+ before also...

After that I test at 7pm.. The speed goes back to 800-900+

M1 can only advise me to keep monitoring..

it may not be related, but running a speed test under a browser often shows incorrectly slower results.
for more accurate readings, get all other users off the network, then run it on the app.

this speed test was run directly connect to ONT.
It's not connected to router, so no other users (except everyone in the block/estate/district sharing the fibre)

From experience running Speedtest from browser not very accurate. You get different t result when you run on diff browser.

so usually Recommand download the Speedtest app.

do take note some anti virus with network protection can affect Speedtest result (browser and app mode) and need to be disable.

If taking the M1 dual 1Gbps package, does M1 give you two ONTs or do they give you an ONT with 2 ports?

A photo from anyone that has this setup would be very much appreciated.

One ONT.

You get to use port 1 and 2 on the ONT instead of port 1 only for standard 1gbps plan

Thank you, that is very helpful to know. My current M1 ONT only has 1 port, so assume M1 will provide a new ONT if I take the package. Do you know the make and model of ONT provided with the dual 1Gbps package?

i am aware you were running it while directly connected to the ONT.

the point was that speed test results under a browser are not accurate.
reasons are left as an exercise for the reader.

So it's the browser that decides to work slowly during working hours but perform very well after work.

I wanted to sign up for my new 4room HDB (standard layout). Will place my router on the TV console there. Occasionally play CS. Saw M1 got both tp-link ax11000 and asus gt-ax6000 at the same price. Which router should I get?
of course Asus if you have the choice... no need to ask one.

the 1 port you are referring to is the Fibre optics connection, the 2Gbps (1Gbps+1Gbps) plan connects to your 1st and 2nd LAN port of your ONT. See diagram below:

HBB-setup-diagram-2021

take note you get 2 separate max 1Gbps connections instead of total 2Gbps, if you have a lot of homelab/IT devices that consume a lot of bandwidth then getting this plan is ok but for the price you might as well go with a separate ISP say Simba ($20/mth) so you get redundancy.

Anyone on M1 1 Gbps plan are having their upload speed throttled due to heavy usage.
Upload speed has been slowly coming down from 1000 mbps to 800, then 700, 600, now 400.

no issue for me with 500Mbps plan, I can hit the Google Workspace 700GB upload limit within 3 hours.

Do you know how much you have uploaded so far in this month?

My speed is decreasing daily at this point as more data is uploaded. It was running at full speed for like 3 days then slowly start dropping day by day.
I wonder how low it will go.

What kind of upload activity? ISPs may choose to throttle things like Bit Torrent.

In terms of throttling of torrent, it is said that M1 is not bad, not as good as VQ/MR, but better than the others (Starhub, Singtel and Whizcomms).

Take note I am using SIngtel and I support the ISP throttling of Bit Torrent myself.

I do not track my uploads as I am just a casual user but everytime I upload to Google Workspace or Mega (few hundred GBs per run) I don't feel any limitation of speed.

If you are running some hardcore file transfers consistently then the ISP has every right to throttle your up/down speed since your neighbouring units that are sharing the bandwidth pool of the fibre connection they could be affected by your activities.

I see some pple hosting mirrors of whatever crap and expecting consumer ISP to let them consume (abuse) bandwidth of 3TB per day /facepalm, they could jolly rent/colo a VPS server and hit that all day long.

Does direct connection to ont works? Seems like the diagram for 2x1gbps shoes it can be done. However wouldn't that put the device connected directly to ont vulnerable?

I think it works, I remembered when installing the ONT the tech will plug in his laptop to test for connectivity and speed. However there no reason for direct connection unless you're doing troubleshooting since you'll need a router there to do DHCP and provide wireless wifi as I am sure you have more than one devices in your household. If you are thinking about using ONT as a "LAN switch" (since it has 4 ports), only the first port is enabled for 500Mbps/1Gbps plan and 1st/2nd port for your dual 1+1Gbps plan, the rest of the ports are disabled by default.

What could be possibly there is your machine running pfsense or hardware firewall that is running between your ONT and router filtering traffic first before it goes through your router.
