tvb dramas usually easier to understand. their dialogue and vocabulary more or less quite one pattern. movies, including stephen chow ones can be quite difficult sometimes

i definitely can't speak w proper accents cuz i nvr go 学堂 to learn formal Cantonese.

HK schools used to teach formal Cantonese b4 97, don't know if they still do.

Sg used to have Cantonese, Hokkien, Hakka schools.

养正学校 in 地客纳街（Club Street) was a Cantonese 学堂. Today Yangzheng Primary School (养正小学) is at Serangoon Ave 3.

1898年戊戌政变后，康有为逃亡到新加坡，1905年清朝工部及广东总督岑春煊先后派遣商务大臣张弼士、视学刘士骥南来，接着孙中山也到新加坡，宣传中国革命运动。他们都提倡设立学堂，开通民智。

继19世纪的崇文阁和萃英书院后，20世纪的华人宗乡团体和庙宇纷纷出资设立华校。创办于1905年的崇正学校是新加坡最早的新式学校，紧接着广肇学堂（养正学校），应新、启发、端蒙、道南、育英、爱同、宏文、静芳等校相继成立。

养正取自《易经》，“蒙以养正，圣功也”。指从童年开始，就要施以正确的教育。 1905年，在广帮领袖黄福基（黄亚福，柔佛新山靠近关卡有一条黄亚福街）、邱雁宾、陆寅傑、何乐如等27名华商号召下，成立了养正学校，为广东族群提供正统的学校教育。

养正学校位于牛车水客纳街（Club Street），老师来自不同的省份，学生则多数来自牛车水附近，有不同的方言群，讲广府、福建、潮州、客家、海南、福州等方言。那个年代住在牛车水的家庭，学生多数有经济困难，白天工作赚钱，晚上到养正上夜课，充实自己。为新加坡妇女争取合法地位，设立妇女宪章的陈翠嫦女士便是在牛车水长大，在养正接受启蒙教育的草根。

They worked during the day to make money and went to Yangzheng to take night classes at night to enrich themselves. one of the famous person studied in 养正学校 is Lee Dai Sor (李大傻 ) broadcaster of Rediffusion. Rediffusion was a wired & paid Radio Broadcast Service In Sg, Msia & HK, etc.

Rediffusion in HK formed the TV Station 丽的 电视台 which later renamed to Asia TV 亚视

Lee Dai Sor (李大傻 ) was also my teacher for Cantonese.
