(Club Street) was a Cantonese 学堂. Today Yangzheng Primary School (养正小学) is at Serangoon Ave 3.
After the 1898 Coup of 1898, Kang Youwei fled to Singapore. In 1905, the Ministry of Industry of the Qing Dynasty and the Governor of Guangdong, Cen Chunxuan, successively sent Minister of Commerce Zhang Bishi and Inspector Liu Shiji to the south. Then Sun Yat-sen also went to Singapore to promote the Chinese revolutionary movement. They all advocated the establishment of schools to enlighten the people's wisdom.
Following Chongwen Pavilion and Cuiying College in the 19th century, Chinese clan groups and temples in the 20th century successively funded the establishment of Chinese schools. Chongzheng School, founded in 1905, is the earliest new-style school in Singapore. Following the Guangzhao Academy (Yangzheng School), Yingxin, Qifa, Tuanmeng, Daonan, Yuying, Aitong, Hongwen, Jingfang and other schools were established one after another.
Cultivating righteousness is taken from the Book of Changes, "It is a sacred skill to cultivate righteousness." It means that correct education must be given from childhood. In 1905, under the call of 27 Chinese businessmen including Guangbang leader Huang Fook Kee (Huang Yafu, there is a Huang Yafu Street near the checkpoint in Johor Bahru), Qiu Yanbin, Lu Yinjie, He Leru, etc., the Yangzheng School was established to provide orthodox school education for the Guangdong ethnic group.
Yangzheng School is located on Club Street in Chinatown. The teachers come from different provinces and most of the students are from around Chinatown. They have different dialect groups and speak Cantonese, Fujian, Teochew, Hakka, Hainan, Fuzhou, etc. dialect. At that time, most of the students living in Chinatown had financial difficulties. They worked during the day to make money and went to Yangzheng to take night classes at night to enrich themselves. Ms. Chan Cui Chang, who fought for the legal status of women in Singapore and established the Women's Charter, grew up in Chinatown and received enlightenment education in Yangzheng.
